a) Most of those battles are being won through the courts.
b) The Dems draw a lot of their votes from ethnic and racial minorities, who tend to be more socially conservative than the college-educated, Atlantic-reading true-blood liberals who comprise the party's public face.
c) The key swing constituency in American politics is actually working-class whites, who may end up on the Democratic side over economic issues or on the Republican side on social issues. The Democrats have lost working-class whites consistently for several decades now; it's by how much they lose them that dictates who wins elections.

a) They are won through the courts because the mainstream moved.  The Supreme court isn't a slave to public opinion but it does respond
b) Well of course not, you are comparing only liberal whites to both liberal and non liberal non-whites if you were looking at the social ideology spectrum of racial groups as a whole in the US it would go something like (left) black<>asian<>hispanic<>white (right).

The massive atom that is the Republican candidate pool is about to add another neutron (or maybe proton), Chris Christie.

Definitely a neutron....higher mass.

Though mainiac makes a good point about electrons. Not to mention their negative charge.

@maniac: True, but an atom of a specific mass can only carry so many electrons.

Are we assuming then that's a corollary to Heisenberg's Principle? That you can either determine a politician's positions or their trajectory, but not both? Maybe it could be Heisenberg's Uncertain That They Have Principles Principle.

Interestingly, this train of thought has been carried a lot further before. A LOT further.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.
