Oh that fee is great.  Is it actually the RNC?  The conservative movement is rife with "political" organizations that are just scams.

Hey, SOTU! Remember that people? They love their acronyms.

Also, has anyone noticed that Boehner is darker then Obama? Think about it.

sneaky bastard.

He was more candid than I expected, and the news of a report on surveillance oversight being published next month is pretty big. Otherwise though, it wasn't too much to talk about. He touched on his administration's achievements, made a nod or two to the current congressional clusterfuck, and touched on his plans for the rest of his term. He certainly talked up the drone program more than it deserves, but I'm glad he plugged the emissions agreement with China and green energy development here.

In general, it's a much more activist, populist SOTU speech then we've seen him give, or at least that's the impression the news has gotten. More positive then previous ones for sure, I have to agree with the commentary that he is working to dispel the lame duck talk before it really gets going. Might have been successful, given the economy is improving and Presidents tend to get credit for economics regardless of whether they deserve it. Barely touched immigration, but that's pretty divisive.

I'm watching the republican response now, and my impression is they are going out of their way to not discuss Obama or their opponents, basically just saying "hey, you guys told us to do things, so we will. We gonna make you proud America. Here's how". I got to say Ernst's voice is annoying the hell out of me.

He's just a whiter shade of tan from Obama.

As for Hillary, I think she should by all means retire. She'll be about Regans age when he first ran for president and he apparently had alzheimers during the last years of his adminstration. I don't have anything against her age and I know there are treatments for alzheimers coming up, it's just a general concern out of awareness because my grandma died of complications from it. She was on my dads side and he was adopted, so I'm not worried about it myself.

Women live longer than men do, on average, and stay sharper. I'm not the biggest Hillary fan, but I do think it's likely there wouldn't be as much age-related worry if she were a man, which is somewhat unfair.

However, if she doesn't run this election cycle, that's it for her. She'll be 73 in 2020, and after two terms that would make her 81.

I think when you're evaluating an individual's health, using broad categories they belong to (like "woman" or "old person") is probably the least helpful way to go about that.
Unlesss you're trying to make a statement about probabilities and belonging to one of those broad categories is a risk factor  ::)

Well, the point isn't about whether or not Hillary is too old- it's about whether she'd be perceived as too old, and stereotypes are indeed relevant.

Being old never stopped any of the papal candidates from running.

Aren't they usually too old to run? I always thought they kinda shuffled around, like old people usually do...

Isn't it kind of a requirement for a papal candidate to be old? In the 50+ range anyway.

Technically no, at least I don't think. My suspicion is that just tends to be how it turns out because it takes such a long time to move up, and it tends to take longer the higher up you get.

The only codified requirements for election as Pope are:

-Male
-Practicing Catholic
-In Good Standing

But then we have things like several centuries of only Italians from a small number of families being elected.
