In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Loudmouth angry blowhard endorses loudmouth angry blowhard.
What?

After stepping back for a moment, my guess is that Christie is fishing for power and influence and is betting on getting it by being the first candidate to go for Trump.

Could be. Plus the fact Christie is still running to keep his seat as Governor of New York's Scrotum (New Jersey).

Six to ten engineers working for two to four weeks? So no more onerous than your average single-issue patch? Actually less onerous, since they only need to test on a single hardware instance. They're disabling the password lockout to allow a brute force attack. Its so easy a typo could break it.

That's... not actually how it works, sorry. A prodigy would get to the level of an average doctor faster, and/or be able to deal with less-understood conditions more effectively, and/or fail with well-understood conditions less often. In any of those cases, a sample size of 1 fuckup doesn't actually rule out anything.

Like, I'm not actually claiming that he's a particularly great doctor, I'm just saying your criteria are bad.
That's actually exactly how it works. You lose any right to portray yourself in that way when you explicitly fuck up another person, yes, even once.

He doesn't say he's a genius, though. He said he left the surgeries in the hands of God, iirc. "Let me be your hands, Lord" or something like that. It's even more frightening, if you ask me, because then if he screws up a surgery, he could just say that it wasn't meant to be, that it was what God intended to happen, etc...

@Apple v. FBI
Note that it isn't just disabling two features--they also have to allow password guesses to be input electronically, and if the system was built well, it should take some work to enable that.  But, yeah, it's really not that much of a probem for Apple; I imagine they've already put more time and money into decrying this whole fiasco than they'd need to just make the firmware.

As for making it for every single phone... well, that depends on how safe they wanna be.  I could very easily see them deleting the software after they've finished, which would require most of the work again.  Or maybe they would just say "fuck it", and write a version which isn't locked to a particular phone, while hoping that no social engineers steal the software.  Hell, I hate Apple, so I could see them making an update which works on all IPhones of this type and then publicly saying so, to encourage people with slightly older phones to update to a newer version with better security.  Although, that would probably just make people switch to Android, despite Android having worse security than even the backdoor'd IPhone.

Even masters in their fields screw up once in a while or Murphys Law decides to go 'screw you'.

Also, http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/02/donald-trump-libel-laws-219866  The republicans should attack his attack on free speech. The stuff that he's talking about is no worse than what you would typically see in an election year. Also, his answer to a lot of problems seems to be 'I'LL SUE YOU!'

How is that realistic? At this point you're just raising the standards of genius surgeons to being smart, skilled, and not unlucky.

Wow. What the fuck, USA? That's pretty much a textbook example of judicial corruption.

Is it a problem if they would already have ruled in favor of the groups they are taking trips from? Just wondering what you think.

That's ridiculous. Medicine isn't simple. Surgery isn't "don't make a mistake and everything goes perfectly". The human body is complex, and unless you have literal super powers you are going to fail at times through no fault of your own even if you do exactly what you are supposed to.

Even if it *was* his fault it doesn't mean he isn't a genius doctor (although he probably isn't regardless), all it would mean is that he made a mistake, which is something that literally every single person does from time to time.

Meh. If you think the primary determinant of skill is luck, fine, I guess. Seems a bit strange to me, but your definitions are your own.
