*sigh* Defense spending in Obama's first term was higher than at any time in US history. It was only after the sequester (in no small part due to GOP screaming about government spending) that defense spending decreased (and which is still higher than it was at any period from 1989-2004).

Now, active-duty enlistment? Yes, that is lower, but it's been roughly flat since about 1995. What these fucking MORONS don't get is that you don't measure the strength of a military in terms of sheer bodycount. A large amount of the money spent over the last 20 years in military R&D (and indeed one of the chief focuses of Donald Rumsfeld) is in automation so that you can do more with less people. A five-man fire team today carries the firepower and C3 capabilities of an entire platoon or more from 1991.

Carpet bombing either refers to destroying the carpet market stalls of Bagdhad with precision strikes or "strategic bombing" - destroying whole cities to guarantee destruction of the enemy's ability to wage war, as in WWII. Can't think of a modern example where that's taken place via bombing by aeroplanes though, cheaper to use artillery or just not flatten everything with bombs
