Not sure if the Message text or the Fact that they get stressed out walking by a refuse pile is more annyoing.

The pages of pages of "seen X die" is quiet annoying. Firstly because it can clatter up the dwarfs description, by A LOT. Also it's misleading because they haven't seen them actually die ...

I can understand it stressing out Dwarves a bit, but I hope at least the wording of the event gets modified.

If you can spare the manpower it's probably worth getting a dedicated mortician/corpse hauler, and putting your refuse pile behind airlock style doors to prevent accidental exposure. I did it anyway in the last version to contain miasma thoughts, but I find it works admirably to prevent refuse pile related stress now. Really though, it isn't too surprising to me that dwarves would be put out by a big mound of dead people and animals just sitting there for all to see. Nobody wants to see that.

Dwarfs are not as violent as they once were. For whatever reason they care when their children are butchered in front of them!

They shouldn't care much for the fate of invaders that came to kill them and everyone they knew. Perhaps a little from the dwarves with very high empathy traits, but that's it.

Disgust a the viscera, perhaps, but not sadness or horror.

It's just a message to let you know where the stress came from (not war on TV from thousands of km away, but actual enemy corpses rotting at your back door). It also increases their courage, so as long as they're not too stressed, it's not a big deal.

Maybe the text message should be different, but the stress and skill growth is fine. If you're troubled by the stress, bury the things in a mass-grave with a door on it. Or stick them in your barracks.

To be fair its likely most people that say that they shouldnt care about goblin deaths have no idea what its like to see a person die (in combat) or havent seen a rotten corpse either. Both can be pretty damn scary when you actually see them for the first time irl regardless if its a hostile or not. I think its perfectly reasonable as well that dwarves sometimes care and sometimes not as well because thats just how it is irl as well.

I would argue that a dwarf's reaction to seeing an enemy corpse should depend on their personality and how desensitized they are. Dwarves with poor empathy should, at most, be disgusted by the viscera. Also the message should differentiate between actually seeing a creature die and seeing a corpse.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

While it would seem terrible to a human, I don't imagine a dwarf would be upset by it. Dwarves are a rough type; stoical, even, at least until they can't take it anymore and go out with a bang. Or they used to be. Perhaps Toady wants dwarves to be a more gentle and sentimental race.

I find it rather realistic... Think about, if most people had to see the body of a intelligent creature they would probably freak out. Or at least, that's what I think. Maybe i'm just weird. But I haven't really been paying too much attention to my dwarves happiness the past few version, perhaps it needs some balance?

Most fresh soldiers was not killing enemies during World Wars. Just because They was so scared. You know... You was trained to kill, you was shatering dummy dolls, you was sparing for years, but it will not prepare you for real killing. Just not... If you will read stories from war (in Poland There are still people who remember war) you will know Toady is right with this.

You can be tough, hardered by hard work, but this is nothing with comparation to kill somebody... or see guts and blood everywhere. Gobos in DF are not dying because hearth deasase, They are dying because They have fractured faces, legs, a lot of wounds... And They smell bad...

This is horrifing, when you are not familiar with this. Even when you are... this is hard to see. Most smart people can not forgot about dead faces, not without reason, Thet are coming back when you will kill somebody.

My personal annoyance with this thought is that they get it when the see the corpse, or part of the corpse, or a sunbleached skeleton. They. Haven't. Seen. It. Die.  >:(

Yeah but "resolution: No change required" so it probably means we need to create a suggestion in the appropriate forum.
This is still bug, at least in description (witnessing death is something completely different than seeing corpse). Need to check if witnessing actual dying yelds same thought... if so, it is certainly "wrong emotion" bug, and THAT needs to be fixed. Looks like Toady overlooked that little detail.

It might be improved if simply seeing dead bodies was less traumatizing, and actually killing was much more traumatizing. Eternally guilt-ridden veterans; warriors driven insane by their own actions (perhaps as in Greek tragedy). But simply seeing a dead body shouldn't leave someone traumatized for life. Maybe scare them, but not make them become psychologically ill. Except in edge-case, extremely squeamish dwarves, of course.
