Suprisingly shallow depths?
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:02:10 am »

So I'm starting a new fortress in vanilla DF 0.40.23. The ground level at start is 145, but the minimum you can actually 'look' down is 82.

This is from my worldgen:

Code: [Select]
[CAVERN_LAYER_COUNT:3]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MIN:85]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MAX:100]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MIN:0]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MAX:15]
[CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MIN:0]
[CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MAX:100]
[HAVE_BOTTOM_LAYER_1:1]
[HAVE_BOTTOM_LAYER_2:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_GROUND:16]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_1:7]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_2:2]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_3:2]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_4:2]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_5:2]
[LEVELS_AT_BOTTOM:1]

There _are_ three cavern layers, but I'm pretty sure previous fortresses using this worldgen had many more Z-levels going down. It looks like the caverns themselves are about 5 z-levels thick. Is that just thinner than usual or am I missing something?

I suspect caverns are supposed to be that small - the only reason players get 100+ Z-level embarks is because "Generate New World" makes ISLAND worlds, and the resulting terrain causes caverns to be a lot taller than usual.

Even back in version 0.31, generating a REGION world would pretty much always get you embarks this shallow. I personally prefer them, since fewer Z-levels means less lag (as well as a shorter distance to transport magma).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You're right - I was generating a region world. It's one I've used a fair few times before, though, so maybe the tall cavern / shallow cavern thing has some variance but with the general trend being as you say. I shall keep an eye open in future (if I remember).

Very useful, Quiestust!

I'm generating pocket worlds based off minor modifications of the pocket island, and I'm not fond of 50 level high caverns (I'm fairly sure I had at least 45 once), and the extra distance to the magma sea (as well as between caverns) is really a drag.
Next world will be based off a pocket region instead.

Huh, that's interesting. I only ever play with region type worlds.. I didn't know people even had worlds that thick. :p

You mean I'm not supposed to have to dig 80 z levels to find the first cavern? Damn, I need to try a region world...

Regions are the best.
