How do I prevent dorfs from biting the enemy?
« on: January 05, 2015, 03:06:58 am »

Well that really looks stupid.

The Swordmaster bites The Bronze Colossus in the right upper leg, but the attack glances away!
The Mace Lord bites The Bronze Colossus in the right upper arm, but the attack glances away!
The Spearmaster bites The Bronze Colossus in the thumb, right hand, but the attack glances away!

By removing their teeth.

But you shouldn't do that. Biting is perhaps the best auxiliary attack type - it allows follow-up shakes which often cause heavy bleeding or outright dismemberment and establishes a hold, which prevents enemies from dodging and often causes them to spend a turn or two breaking the hold instead of attacking.

Dwarfs don't have an attack choice algorithm to prevent them from using attacks that are inherently useless in the given situation. Dwarfs will also swarm unconscious large critters to inefficiently punch them in the head. You could prevent that by chopping off all dwarfs' hands, but i'm not sure that'd really be a worthwile endeavour.

Don't think of biting as useless. I had a guy lose both arms, only to wake up and bite out the throat of a few goblins a month later.

I just got a very vivid picture of a swarm of dwarves all gnawing on a huge colossus made of bronze.

Biting anything hard or armoured should break a dwarf's teeth. It should only really be a last resort attack for wrestling fights, and only done on exposed flesh like the throat and not the top of a goblin's skull.

This actually raises a question.. If a dwarf bites something with poisonous blood what would happen?

Nothing if they never drink the blood. And they'd never have a reason to as long as there's booze around!

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

If they bite deep enough to cause bleeding, they should suffer the effects of the poisoned blood.

Kind of depends how harsh the poison is, some minor poisons they could probably spit out with lessened or no ill effects... That said, biting something with corrosive acid for blood should definitely cause more than a little bad breathe...

I thought that poison blood was toxic on skin contact, but that may just be from some forgotten beasts.

Well the effects of forgotten beast syndromes are random, it may cause necrosis from skin contact or it may just give them a minor headache that clears up in an hour... yeah, FBs in general are pretty random and their syndromes are too...

As dwarf has no problem consuming anything from raw waterbuffalo meat to wild strauberry, its teeth should be similar to that of rhesus macaque, racoon, badger, or other small omnivores, which is a reasonable weapon.

Yes, they are strong weapons, but biting a goblin in the head muscle (why do heads have that much muscle and fat?) and shaking it about is still daft.
