Choose your own path. . . . Like the choose your own adventure books. . . . Since some languages can use their version of the word path to mean the same thing.
But it could also mean he is a stikler for terms, like me. And that would mean, no matter what we do, we only prolong or hasten the inevitable.

You read Jim's instructions, and begin to follow them. You have to think for a minute about how to draw a nine-pointed star, then you figure it out. You  have a steady hand, and the lines are mostly straight. You put the book in place, and get the candles. They are oddly chalky. You put them in place, and light them. You sprinkle the ashes, and say the words. You hear a long intake of breath, and the book slowly swells. You hear a long, wheezing outtake of breath, and the book decreases.

Physical Condition:
Well

Awake
Perturbed

Choices:
1. Scream.
2. Spin around and look for the breathing person.
3. Pick up the book.

Surely the book did not breath. We must confim this, though.

You bend down and pick up the book. As soon as it leaves the enneagram the candles go out. You look closely at the book. It doesn't seem to be breathing. You laugh at your mistake, until you hear the voice. A papery voice whispers out of the book.

"Thank you, young David. Could you open this book to page 43?

Would now be a logical time to scream?

We are seriously perturbed and screaming might help calm us down. Once we're calm, we can continue Uncle Jim's quest.
