I'll admit that I don't know what methodology was used to gather the data but it looks pretty bad on first blush.

And seems backed up by stories like: http://gamerant.com/no-mans-sky-sales-drop/

81% sales drop
I guess that's the reason why they didn't make a demo version or sent review copies. They knew that this would happen.

was kinda expected.
have you ever seen one game with pre-review embargo over-delivering lately?

There has been one day on which the amount of No Man's Sky owners dropped by 500.

well that's actually very few.

on the side: I agree the game is fairly enjoyable to some and not that bad. but people really need to smart up and stop pre-ordering from cinematics alone - especially on brand new concepts - and this cannot be stressed enough.

DOOM? They didn't give out review copies pre-launch for that one.

There's something to be said about the mistakes of the past on all this, though. Wonder if we'll ever get a repeat of this bit also.

didn't DOOM had an open beta?

edit: and that beta had reviews, too https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/04/15/doom-beta-review/

Only for the multiplayer, and people were lukewarm on that at best. There was real, legitimate fear that it was going to be shit and they weren't letting even reviewers get their hands on the full game out of concern for this. It's like if Square Enix sent out review code of Mankind Divided that was purely Breach, and said you had to wait for the rest until launch.

yeah, but that's a total. there were more refunds that day than there were new purchases.

OWNED, not players.

500 copies more were refunded than were sold.

Okay you know what, I take it all back.

The game has procedurally generated giant golden dongs.

But remember:
People didn't preorder because of this stupid "presales are a scam!" culture on the internet, or they're just lazy, or they don't understand how preorders work.
According to MaximumZero, people who didn't preorder were the stupid ones.

You're taking MaximumZero out of context with a completely unnecessary attack.

Except the people he was referring to were the ones buying physical copies of the game on day 1. If you're trying to buy a game with a review embargo placed on it day 1, what's the difference between preordering and getting it the first day its out?
