Honestly I'm close to buying the game but none of my regular youtube or twitch subs have reviewed it yet so imma wait for that

I suggest you check out various random people's streams to get a clearer idea. This way you rule out the reviewer's bias and your own bias towards the reviewer and you don't get tricked into a better opinion by an interesting review structure or comedy. Make up your own mind. If you're on the edge, don't let what others say be what tips you one way or the other, it's what has created this whole mess in the first place.

Edit: Also, inb4 the explosion of angry people who will complain about server problems. There WILL be server problems, there almost always are server problems at launch. It's economically stupid and wasteful to build infrastructure based on opening peak usage. This is not just a game phenomenon, it applies to all sorts of infrastructure in life.

But the game can be played offline, right? Just won't be able to upload your discoveries or see other player-made names?

If not, then the game is off the table for me due to practical reasons unfortunately.

Actually, even if I didn't need offline, I think I would prefer to go without the universe filled with "dank meme" and dick-names all over the place.

I'm sure it can be played offline, but I'm sure you're not naive enough to think that the internet wont look for any reason to erupt in outrage.

The one claim I actually find dubious is the one about it being unlikely that people run into each other. The game guides everyone to the center of the universe. This means that everyone has to start within reasonable travel distance from there and everyone should eventually go to a relatively small part of the game if I understand it correctly. This is not a fact though, just my predictions based on what little info is available. We won't know for sure until later.

But when you get there, apparently this happens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq_YEgwd58k
TL;DRW: you spend 2+ minutes (he was already in it when he started recording, apparently) in a reverse starfield screensaver, then your ship turns around and it's a normal starfield screensaver for 30 or so seconds, and then it dumps you on a planet in a new galaxy with a damaged ship so apparently you have to do the beginning of the game all over again

Yes, someone reached it in the released PS4 version already. I was expecting it to take a little longer, but apparently it's ezpz.

Well, it's supposed to be out now, according to the timers. I know that this is rarely an accurate thing, but at least it's hilarious to watch the steam forums turn on themselves in desperation.
I thought it was coming out at 1pm EST, as in a bit under 1 hour from now
I wouldn't know, because people insist on not using GMT for stuff, and I can't be arsed to know what EST or PST or whatever means.

Obviously, PST is Pak'ma Standard Time.

Everyone install the game. Now.
Let's spread the name of they mighty Toad throughout this whole weirdly-shaped virtual galaxy.

E: Damn, I might not even get to try it before heading out. Almost 30m to download it.  ::)

TotalBiscuit is about to stream some NMS so I'll watch a bit of that while I decide.

Edit: Apparently a few steam download servers have died due to the strain.

I'd like to point out about the video that he found the center of the Galaxy, not Universe.  The Universe is made up of a massive number of galaxies.  He did NOT find the center of the universe.  Sorry but people using those terms interchangeably has been giving me an aneurysm

That was a light one. I've seen people calling stars 'galaxies', and a particular streamer girl called a planet a galaxy..couldn't watch for more than 2 minutes.
"I know it's a planet but I call it a galaxy heehee" oh my god

Obviously it isn't if you watched the video.... it literally goes 'new galaxy discovered'

Also from what I've seen of streamers, it seems that there's a couple of factions that can dominate the galaxy and they are different for different people... leading me to believe it's possible to start in a different galaxy than someone else.

I am not encouraged. TB's first statement "Welp, the game runs like crap."

His computer is a monster and he's getting frame drops and hitching from the get-go.

Damnit I've just installed the game and now it won't start ! From the steam forums I can see that there are plenty of people with the same issue.

Edit : fixed it!

Crash during launch. Twice, after the logo.

It's going so well! I'm not too sad about not buying on launch now.

but is there a distance given from that center? because it might very well not exist
