The only real issue that could arise would be the ship glitching into the terrain and the player being stuck, but the game has multiple load points and autosaves pretty much every time you do anything.

I'll admit that I don't know what methodology was used to gather the data but it looks pretty bad on first blush.

And seems backed up by stories like: http://gamerant.com/no-mans-sky-sales-drop/

Doesn't steam display the number of online players?

Yes, but steamdb shows historical data. I just checked and the figures are correct for NMS

Concurrent players peaked around 212,000 on August 12 but the second peak on August 20th is only about 46k. Current number is a bit less than Fallout 4 at 23k

Spore has ~about as interesting exploration and formerly had similar multiplayer features (before the inevitable shutdown of the servers that would provide creatures created by other players, which let me tell you avoided the grey goo pretty well) with the additional bonus of giving you actual tools to change the world around you in meaningful ways.

Aside: The server shutdown was apparently temporary. When I got it finally registered on my Origin account a month or two ago, they appeared to be up and working.

That's pretty brutal, when you consider that both games, by their styles, are "supposed" to lend themselves to binge playing... and one is about a year old, the other a fresh, highly marketed release.

It's unfortunate for them, but I'm genuinely glad to think that a significant amount of folks out there may be voting against an over-hyped shoddy product with their buck. There are enough perpetually unfinished titles as is.

Well, they already made millions of dollars regardless of whether or not people are playing after purchase. Refunds probably don't put that much of a dent in it.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

And they're still marketing it. I went to the theatre with some friends last night, and the first ad that came on was a 30+ second spot for NMS.

Right-right, but they're getting a negative response, and it's snowballing. That's nice, and who knows? One of these days, from a different team designing another a game, something good might come of it all.

I have never seen an ad for this game that I knew was an ad.

I guess that's the reason why they didn't make a demo version or sent review copies. They knew that this would happen.
