Cancels drink, resting injury..
« on: November 24, 2007, 10:24:00 am »

After installing the new version I am spammed by this message.  It blots out all other messages when I press "a" and view announcements.  I have a number of injured dwarfs, but not so many to justify this blotting out everything else.  I'm also fearful that these dwarfs are not getting drink now, since they keep running a few paces towards the exit of the barracks where their resting and then running back to bed, over and over again never getting anywhere.

Anyone else got this problem?  It's not a bug, I noticed it was mentioned in the changelog as an intentional change but, seems to not be working as intended.

I guess it was added to allow, for example, to place a drink stockpile next to a, khm, "resting place" of injured dwarves, so if they are not brought water, they will run to drink. If there's a bug, it's probably that the "rest" job is reinstated way too often, not allowing the dwarf to get very far.

Yeah I tried putting booze in the barracks.  I only put one barrel, but it didn't solve the problem.  I guess I could put a lot more booze in there, but since these guys only move about 3 to 4 squares it still might not solve the problem since my barracks is both far wider and longer than 4x4.

I think your right though, maybe it ought to be adjusted so that the rest job doesn't override eating and drinking so quickly.  Sounds like rest and sleep might not be getting a long well either based on the other post.

If my dwarfs start dying of dehydration I'll report it.  In the meantime, I guess I'm going to live without job cancellations.

EDIT:  They're now dying of dehydration.  Noone was dying in 33b, the peasants were taking proper care of the wounded.

Try putting a pond designated as a water source beside the dwarf's bed, It might work.

There neesds to be a checklist of job cancellation types to chose from. For example a submenu where we can choose haul jobs, eat/drink jobs, build jobs, dig jobs, jobd cancelations due to monsters, etc. After all, some of these jobs are more important at different times than others. For example, in an early fort, all announcements are important, but late in a fort, you might only care about build cancelations.

Count me in as someone with this problem. I've got a dwarf with a lower spine injury causing the constant cancellation ruckus. I've had several other hurt dwarves (limb injuries mostly) and none of them ever caused the problem, so the added immobility from a lower spine injury may be the cause of it.

Okay, I've done some careful looking at my fort to see what the hell was going on, and I finally found it. I've got a dwarf with a yellow arm injury (oh boohoo, walk it off sissy... >.> ) who is now starving, dehydrated, and drowsy, who is in the main hallway between the barracks and my food/drink supply. He is literally walking back and fourth in 2-3 unit steps, constantly cancelling his drink action to rest his injury. If he'd just stop trying to frickin' drink and pick one or the other, drink or rest, I wouldn't have this problem. My nurse can't help him as he's running around bleeding and starving in the halls. As it stands, the poor guy is just about to die so I'm going to have to postpone my game until Rick updates his healing utility for version ~33c or until a patch is applied.

I've lost three dwarves to this bug. On the other hand, they were all just lowly fortress guards, so I didn't miss them much, but the ruckus was annoying.

This bug makes me sad.  It's bad enough every other capable awesome dwarf got blown to bits by the now named legendary giant bats, but now I have to lose another.  Oh well, flooding time.

Here's hoping for heal.exe to be updated.  :)

I think it has another reason and I found a solution. Just posted in bug reports: 'engraving cancels rest'. Did you happen to engrave under the bed the dwarf was resting in (or perform another action that caused another dwarf to work in the spot where he was resting)? If you remember which bed he first rested in, you can fix the behavior. Deconstruct the bed.

I've got a peasant doing the same thing, except he's running back and forth from the barracks to try and get some food.  I managed to lock him out of the barracks, and he's slowly zig-zagged his way down to where the food storage is.  Most strange, it is.

I just noticed that his brain is also moderately wounded.  Maybe he's going a bit crazy...

Okay - I found putting a bed and assigning it to the hungry/thirsty and wounded dwarf next to the well and/or foodpile will at least give your guy a chance.  He'll eventually get some food, or a sip of water and sit down for a moment.  As I speak, the peasant that was causing me problems is sitting on his bed, trying to eat a -turtle biscuit-.  Hopefully he'll finally get a bite out of that thing...  If he can't finish eating it, this could mean that this tactic only works for thirsty dwarves, who gradually fill up their thirst, though my guy isn't hungry anymore, so he must be getting something.

Yeah - It works.  He's no longer spamming me at the note of 158 messages per second.  Hope it works for everyone else...

I found a fix if anyone still has this. If you have dfhack you can use fullheal on the guy and he gets his thirst quenched and it fixes it
