Misc. object user & Talking
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:08:23 pm »

First off the conversation system, I can hardly figure it out anymore. Why is it so complicated?

Second how effective is miscellaneous object user? I know shields use it but just how good is it?

Can be rather nice. It depends on the object. For example, try stabbing with an steel bolt, or waving around an enormous steel corkscrew. :D

Misc. object user is excellent. You can beat someone to death with their own guts.

Shield bashing is good if you want to knock people out (hit them in the upper/lower body a lot, you'll break a rib or a hip eventually) but head attacks are devastating.
I find that common sense is rather hard to come by: I can understand killing someone with a crutch, but HOW DO YOU KILL SOMEONE WITH A ROPE REED FIBER GLOVE?

Still, it's a really good skill to have, mainly because you can use ANYTHING (like saguaro fruit or mud or even water) to kill people. Hilarious and effective.

The conversation system's been like this as long as I can remember, only a few things have been added.

Well I guess you don't have a very good memory (or just started playing Dwarf Fortress recently), because until version .40 the conversation system was completely different. I mean, not the same in any way at all. As for advice on figuring it out, navigating it is similar to the old way, but there are submenus and the things you can ask about are different. I think it's pretty simple to figure out if you just try it. Also misc object user is a great skill. I recommend claiming a site, then cutting both of the lord's arms off and wielding them as weapons.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

The problem I have with the new conversation system is that it doesn't actually track Quests anymore.

I end up forgetting a lot of quests simply because I can't remember where the location is.
I guess notepad will be a good option until a get used to it more...  :'(

Exactly I have no frickin clue what I am doing or whom I am doing it for, it is overcomplicated. Plus no one has anything to say other than it was inevitable

If they are saying it's inevitable it means you're doing something they consider useless.
"Half hour ago, I fell three wolves in the fluffy plains!"

The conversation system is a bit annoying. Quests are no longer tracked, if you inquire about troubles, people will point you half-way across the world and the rumor system is just annoying to scroll through. I wish "brag about violent acts" automatically spread the most relevant rumor and that the rumors were bracketed (each rumor about a certain person is a menu unto to itself, containing all relevant info: actions, events, kills, etc.)

But really I just wish the quest system came back and a way to ask about specific sites which haven't been mentioned yet (vaults for example), rather than asking about surroundings over and over.

Being specific seems to be something adventure mode lacks.

Personally, I just think that a quest list and a way to easily spread you're important feats instead of having to scroll through a 30 page dialogue just to say that you've killed a single Titan... only to be met with a "It was inevitable" response would be enough for me to be more inclined, than I already am, to continue with adventure mode.

It would also be nice to have certain things to ask about when it comes to surroundings.
In 34. I would spam the surrounding areas option just to fill the map.

There should be more structure, as said before adventure mode is too vague. Maybe an option to summarize all of ones feats or all that will not offend that particular person/civ.

Also there needs to be a quest list, sure I could write it down but it doesn't feel the same nor does if  function the same.

Have to agree here. The conversation system seemed nice before it came out but now it just feels like a mess.

You couldn't be more wrong on that account.
They don't care about you announcing that you just killed their leader, either.
except they do because they'll spit at you right afterwards

I'm not sure that is what it is...

I've killed Dragons and the only response they give is "It was inevitable..." even if they were the ones who were being tormented by it.
