That seems like a lot of money for not a lot of space.  What about running it on Amazon?  S3 storage is cheap, and your webserver probably only needs a micro-instance.

Here, check this out:

http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html#r=IAD&s=EC2&key=calc-2A3FB73C-6F01-47AE-912F-90C1BBB886F5

$20 per month. Less for the first year, if you are not an existing customer and can take advantage of the "Free  Tier".

If I add 1TB of output, it jumps up to $100, but that is still 2/3 of your previous estimate:

http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html#r=IAD&s=EC2&key=calc-88DE48D6-BF67-46D0-BA8C-D407A439712D

and while you may have peaked at a couple TB, it is probably high for a monthly average.

For some reason I'd assumed DFFD was an official Bay 12 site. That's kind of silly given its url, isn't it? Thanks so much for keeping it up and going.

I'll happily donate to keep DFFD afloat. That said, I'm with Puke on hosting it on AWS. Don't want to have to donate any more than I have to ;).

Hi everyone.

I am a DF fan and a small hosting provider,
I re-sell to my customers services by https://www.cloudsigma.com
I have 3 servers in Zurich (Swizerland) and this same hosting company have also servers in Las Vegas (USA).

I was searching for so long for a way to donate something to this community ... and I had the luck to see this topic.
I would be very happy to host your files for free, covering all expenses, as long as it works under php environment and the total expense is < 1000 $ every year.

  • Can you provide me more info about how many Gigabytes of data you need ?
  • Do you have some idea of the traffic (download) that they generate ? (I ask this because I also pay $ 0.0715 / GB (output traffic).

The title definitely needs to be "DFFD is GOING DOWN". Perhaps not quite as technically accurate as the current title, but certainly more attention-grabbing.

As for donations, I am unfortunately a flat broke teenager living under her parents' roof, so bleh on that from me. Having a more attention-grabbing "OH CARP" title will probably get more people metaphorically running over to see what the fire's about, though, which might get things going better in the donation-pledging area. And I do think having Toady take on the hosting, with Janus having access to the new DFFD, would work if everyone involved is okay with it.

Another one of those times when I wish I wasn't a strapped-for-cash college student. Yeah, this is a major issue, and this thread needs more attention.

I glossed over this earlier because I assumed someone was just having trouble accessing DFFD. Glad I checked anyway.

Don't have any advice to add, but I will go on record as more than happy to pay a monthly sum to keep the File Depot running. It's been an invaluable service for years, and you have my thanks for keeping it up for so long.

This is amazing. You are amazing. I hope Janus has seen your post and gotten in touch with you, because that would be an incredible service to the Dwarf Fortress community. Either way it turns out, the fact that you offered means quite a bit.

I wish this thread got more attention, and your post more attention, simply due to how often the DFFD gets used. I hope it works out. Thank you for your offered donation to us. It means quite a bit.

Hm, terms of service are hard to understand sometimes, but for example in Linode's TOS I don't see anything about file hosting services. And it's only $80/month for 192GB storage 8TB transfer. And we could also host something else useful (like several webfort servers :) )  there because we'll get a lot of RAM/CPU.

I saw that Janus wrote about 150 GB, let's make them 200: for my hosting is 150$/year, NO PROBLEM

Big problem is yearly traffic, considering we're speaking of a file sharing portal for huge data.
Let me now if  you have further information about that.

I also would like to see statistics to understand wich countries % are involved in bandwidth usage.
I'm an Italian fan of DF, but I guess that majority of users are from USA.
In that case it would be less convenient for me to help you, and also the speed (user experience) could be a little slower.

This is the company servers: https://www.cloudsigma.com/company/#connect

p.s.
of course we're speaking of something big and important,
so IF this goes trough the end,
I assume responsibility of professionality, safety and privacy,
I'll wait for a feedback from Toady One on this (whom I should give FTP login+password as acquaintance)
Janus will still handle technical stuff and have all access to data (FTP login+password and admin user),
I can't deny I will have access too as network administrator, but I will use it only for emergencies (like security updates) and problem-solving.

This is why, while I will offer some advice, I won't actually support DFFD.  It hosts some child porn / rape fantasies (modded adventure mode stuff) that were removed from the forums for good reason, and I can't give monetary support to a service that condones that in any way.

Toady does not allow it here, and he wont be associated with any service that does allow it.  And I won't give financial support to any service that allows it.

Mhh ... I am not aware of what's inside DFFD,
but I use it DAILY to download Masterwork DF and other stuff,
and also it's my job to host stuff and "I don't care what's in the box".

I don't want to mix my personal love for DF and my work as a hosting company,
my proposal is totally professional and I just want to help.

IF this "morally wrong content" is very old and obsolete,
we could just "move" actually DFFD into the new hosting like it is,
and THEN delete it,
asking their mantainers to put it elsewere.

But this is something separate that must be done BEFORE or AFTER the transfer,
it can't be done DURING the transfer for obvious pratical reasons.

If this "morally wrong content" stays in my server for a few months, it's not a problem for me.

I will inform myself better, because I tought that DFFD was more official than you're explaining to me now,
and that it was a useful service also for Toady One, that could take my donation rather than having me host this files.

What's obvious is that:
losing forever DFFD would be a very bad thing for all threads in this forum that have their URLs linking to it,
like my own signature with my savegames.

It would be a lot of work for everyone to change this "habit",
think for example to Meph of Masterwork DF that use DFFD to host his MOD,
and he's in a 10 months journey right now.

I have found 3 mods and 1 story with sexual content.
The story is awesome until the end where it becomes horrible and sad. To the point the player stopped playing adventure mode.
1 of the mods is from before z-levels (IIRC) and the other 2 are from 34.x and prior. None appear actively maintained. Though ironically one of the mods helped inspire a current MWDF plug-in.

So, the situation seems really less scary than it was pictured  :)

I'm not for censorship, and I don't care.

Instead, if this is going to be done, I'll prefer a "let's forget very old and unmantained stuff".
But this must be done by moderators one-by-one, not from the hosting manager,
I won't change anything and I don't have the time-need to do so.

I'll wait for Janus answer then.

How about adding the files as well to as Magnet torrents.
That could also aleviate a lot of bandwith over time and make possible for some users to download from other sites if they somehow don't have access to the download site , the Links could be put out here on the forums with their own file integrety checks to minimize Malware / viruses etc.
