Spoiler: 6/52 (click to show/hide)

By word count and average book length, I should be at ten or so by now. Stupid fantasy epics.

And The Stormlight Archives is planned to be a similar length. The waiting is going to be agony.

In if somewhat late. Going to just try to reach the old standard of 50ish books etc per year, maybe this will give little more motivation?

I've got a whole bunch of non-fiction half-read so this list should increase massively very soon.

I liked them too, but everyone has their own taste.

Well, I liked them well enough to finish them (part of the grumbling was that I've got so many other things to read and the books are really long) the setting was interesting, I liked many of the stories they tell, the cthaeh was a neat idea, there's some mysteries to keep you pondering. Buuuut the pace is glacial, you have to wait ages for a payoff to these mysteries (in many cases books) and at the end of the day it's a story about someone who has the power at being super good at whatever they turn their hand to. I'd just finished reading Scott Lynch's books and I really liked how in them although there are meta-plot mysteries by the handful, each novel is self-contained and complete and tells a coherent story.

The Name of the Wind & Wise Man's Fear felt more like a series of vignettes about how someone came to be famous, with almost all the major narrative payoff (why is Kvothe rubbish in the modern day, how/why did he cause a war, why is Bast trying to bring him back, why was a Chandrian leading a band of bandits etc.) reserved for later books.

I would disagree about the glacial pace. Things do happen, but I suppose different people are interested by different things.

Also, I'll count the Chronicles of Narnia as one book because they're bite size and hardly challenging reading.
So, that's 12/52

I like The Name of the Wind & Wise Man's Fear too, & think the pace is fine. Better to keep the mysteries open too long then reveal them too soon, after all once you answer them there's no longer a mystery! I'm more critical of the I'm Kvothe & I'm so fantastic in every way aspect of the books, though there's enough I enjoy about the story to live with that.

I think the frame narrative aspect makes some of the mysteries more frustrating for me. There are things that are common knowledge in the present day of the setting (why there is a war, who with etc.) that for reasons of mystery Rothuss decides that even after 1300 pages he's not going to let you know. My favorite part in The Wise Man's Fear (which was a better book overall) was when he skipped over the shipwreck. That was excellent pacing: as a reader his journey to see the Maer was irrelevant, I wanted to see what happened when he got there and the relevant part of the wrecking was that he'd lost most of his stuff.

for lack of a proper reading thread, i'll post here.

Does anyone know of any Tom Clancy political thriller type books set in the 40k universe? I feel like everything is god the imperium is rough things are rough i am manly or Commissar Cain

I say this because I just started reading God of Death and i'm really interested by how Astartes chapters handle combat and curveballs

Basically, I want the feel i'd get from a narrative lp of Chapter Master in a book.
