Emperor of the Fading Suns is a lost turn-based strategy gem from 1996. It's lore is based on the Fading Suns PnP universe. You play as a noble house in a declining galactic empire. You start with some units and resources and one or two planet maps under partial control. The idea is to accumulate power for your house over rival houses, via politics, research and economic/military expansion to eventually declare yourself emperor.

In 1996, the EotFS suffered from a hasty bug-filled release and weak AI. However, later mods like Nova, Hyperion and Emperor Wars fixed a lot of balance and AI issues, and it was always a killer game for PBEM multiplayer. The game is really unique in the history of empire builders and drips that "space feudalism" vibe of the Dune or Warhammer 40k universes.

Maybe The Settlers and the Anno series could fit too as even if not turn based, you can really take your time.

And by the way, make sure to check the open source Widelands (clone of The Settlers 2) and Unknown Horizons (clone of some of the Anno), both being very good .
