Usefull vampires
« on: January 01, 2015, 02:52:46 am »

Sorry if there is already a post for this/........ >_<

Well, what i want is more use for vampires or more options.

I know i could lock one in side of a room to operate levels for the rest of eternity.
And I heard that is dwarves go with out alcohol, then their states start to go down and this also happens to vampires, if that has changed that is good.

But couldn't vampire drink blood not by killing people???
I am not really sure what to do with a vampire but i fell just making them a killing mechine that every one hates. I always feel bad for people who turned into were creatures or vampires since I can't leave them with the rest of my dwarves, so either i kill or lock them away.

Make them a squad of one and send them out against sieges.  Make sure to reburrow them into a locked room afterwards.  Vamps have triple physical stats... they make fearsome warriors.

Its not a given for a vamp to kill someone though.  Often you'll find a dwarf feeling faint and looking pale.  This is a dorf that survived a vamp feeding, and is sadly random.  Vamps don't have a skill or even personality check when feeding.  It might depend on the health of the dorf being sucked though.

Heh... if only they'd drink from the barrels of blood caravans keep bringing....

You can also contaminate the water supply and make everyone a vampire then the fortress becomes easier to manage.

Vampires might get more powerful when magic is implemented. It'd make sense for them to turn into mist or bats or become invisible

If you have a well, just build some grates over the cistern and make the vampire bleed while standing there. Make a spike trap surrounded by floor grates and the blood should drip onto the water.

I've never done it though because it's kind of game breaking. I think vampires don't eat or sleep

They also don't NEED to drink blood, it just gives them a stat boost.

Yeah Toady even remarked on vampire blood wells...  He said its the favorite part of us (the community) in that we weaponize EVERYTHING.  Magma was the obvious answer... but we've also used falling socks and fluffly wombats.  We turn the demons of hell into obsidian blocks or ice cubes.  We take forgotten beasts that spew instant death and bend it to our will, using this ferocious beast that has slaughtered thousands since it began wandering the depths in a time before time and harmlessly contain it.  We then milk its poison for use on our weapons to instantly slaughter our enemies.  We find ways to melt gnomes with gnomeblight (even without using weapons). We take a tragic, fortress shattering event (vampire inflitration) and turn it into a weapon with blood-wells.  We convert our entire fortress into night creatures and revel in the blood of our enemies! RAWR!

I was informed that survivors of vampire feeding were due to two factors: Excellent health and fitness, and also the vampire being interrupted whilst feeding. I do know that I watched a feeding vampire get interrupted in the dining room once, and his victim definitely survived. So that's something.

It irritates me that this goes on in the dining room on a regular basis, with victim death, yet "no one saw a thing", there's just a corpse drained of blood. My dorfs are so myopic sometimes.

So... are vampires more worshipful of Armok, God of Blood, as they drink a toast to him every season? Or are they less worshipful, as they drink blood instead of spilling it in his name?

Armok is never acknowledged as an entity one way or the other by anyone other than the players and the title screen, nobody's going to worship something they don't believe exists- though they'd probably be looked at favorably by Armok, metaversically speaking. On the other hand, there wouldn't be any vampires without random idiots profaning in temples and getting cursed, so the gods that are acknowledged within a universe undoubtedly hate them.

I subscribe to the theory that the /player/ is Armok, explaining why dwarves becomesychotic bloodthirsty lemmings under our control, described as a 'period of madness', violating virtually all their ethics.

Talk about myopic: there were 3 dwarfs in a 2x2 room. one sleeping, one smoothing walls and one... well I got the message that the ranger had been found drained of blood and immediately paused. And nobody reported any crime.

So my immigrant master everything metalworker was the vampire. I checked him out. Longish history of moving between civs: check. Alcohol deprivation: check. Worshipper of a god of nature... who received the worship of a vampire 50 or so years ago. I convicted him despite the lack of eye witness testimony and he's chained up in a locked room with a gold chain and personal gold statue garden. And of course he became mayor a few seconds after I appointed a sheriff to arrest him.

I assume the issue with vampires killing their victims is because the vampire wants to resist the urge to feed and waits so long that by the time they can't resist anymore they can't control themselves and drink the victim dry...

Of course, if we had some sort of blood heater so the vampires had a source of warm blood aside from the veins of their fellow citizens it would probably make them a lot less dangerous (granted, there's still no way to get blood aside from buying it off merchants, but maybe there could be a way to extract it from livestock or something)

Thus why they come to their senses after a questionable period of judgement when you retire the fort, huh.
