ok, let me start out by saying, this is a nice little operation these dorfs have going. i was sent to take over as the fortress became a barony, as a sort of changing of the guard. first thing i noticed though, we are tragicly low on booze, so ive set up our stills to start brewing some of the plump helmets they bought from the caravan. the second thing i noticed, was that we are also very low on traps. if something gets in, we have to have a line of defense behind the militia, or we are all going to get FUCKED UP. metalsmiths are on it now. third, we arent growing any plump helmets, which is also going to change soon.

got a wave of migrants, including a high master suturer and a promising dorf who has been assigned to the militia training squad.

caravan left, bought a bunch of trap components and anvils from them, ordered more trap components. we need fucking trap components.

digging out farms, training dorfs, so far so good.

There's an 8-deep row of cage traps between the depot and the fortress, as well as a tertiary lockdown bridge.

Was the militia dwarf a swordsdwarf? If not, put him with the high-tier squad, he'll train faster and won't contaminate the swordy skill set.

Trap components are probably  not a good thing to buy, due to their gigantic cost. Buy trinkets and armor, then melt them at the magma forges and reforge them into armor for the millita and, of course, trap components.

If you absolutely must employ weapon traps, use spiked balls or maces and warhammers. It's the safest way to deal with the undead scourge.

Ok, sorry, but that was where I was forced to end. I'm going for huge trap feilds of maces and hammers, with some other random bits. The promising militia dorf was a adequate armor user, dodger, shield user, and biter. He is in the swordsdorf squad.

Somehow I don't see how competent biter should qualify you for zombie-fighting duty in the long run.

The expert wrestler wrestled a super fast invisible zombie goblin in armor to death, and punched the limbs off another two, so don't underestimate the striking skills.
