Pick fruits problem (40.19)

I recall in 40.15 my dorfs could pick fruits from the trees.
But in 40.19 they didn't do that despite having free ladders.

Was that a bug or I overlooked something?
If that was a bug, has it been fixed in recent versions?

Are you setting a ground-level (i) zone around the tree and enabling plant gathering in it?

Yeah, all settings are default.
I saw one or two persimmons in my kitchens, maybe they pick them up on the ground.
Maybe it was wrong season.

The fruits only start appearing in mid-summer.  At that time you can easily pick hundreds of fruit out of the trees with free stepladders, idle plant gatherers, and a proper plant gathering zone under the tree.  The ladder lets them pick from 2 z levels up and an additional square over.  However, if you put the zone IN the trees, they will likely be unable to reach that zone to begin.  If there was a hillside/platform/stairs leading up to the tree's canopy they'd work like normal... its how you strip the top of a tree.  However, you probably put the zone on that first canopy.  It needs to go on the ground under the tree.
