Provided they are of the same species, that is? The elves have been bringing me a lot of giant jaguars.

I don't think so; I'd have seen it by now since I have loads of war dogs and giant olms occupying few cages together.

I suppose caging acts something like a stasis, preventing any interaction between cage occupants. They can, however, give birth in cage if they were already pregnant before caging.

I thought it used to. The breeding changes might have stopped it, though.

Edit: Nope.

Do animals still spore, or did I miss a big update? As far as I know, as long as a male and female are in your fortress grid, they'll be getting it on, all the time.

40.19 (I think) was the breeding update. All animals, including dwarves IIRC, now have to contact each other to breed (it's instant) and you can geld things now.

Yeah, it's for dwarves too. Still spore-based, but they might have to be directly adjacent to each other.

Sorry to burst your bubble but... That's not exactly spore based. What they mean by breeding through spores is that, use to, you could have two creatures on opposite ends of the map with no way to contact each other (doors, walls, what have you) and they could breed. It's not a contact based system, so they have to actually touch (e.g. be in adjacent tiles) to breed.

He called spores because there's no "getting on with it", they just pass by their spouse and "spore" them instantly.

I think you just misunderstood his description.

Cages will always be my favorite location for puppy-prison.

So now it's more of a baby-making fist bump than spore based breeding...

Chain your males in the center of a pasture of females and you will get them all pregnant.

Still can't answer OP question though. If the male or female are in a cage, they don't occupy tiles in the same sense that being out of a cage would mean, so I'm going to guess no and hope that somebody can do some science to verify.
