What was the learning curve thread? I presume it was some kind of old joke about DF having a steep learning curve, or something similar.

GavJ started a thread about how DF actually has a shallow learning curve because science, then a bunch of people went well yeah, but we don't actually say that because language, then it kind of just got stuck in an infinite loop until Toady pulled the plug 50 pages later or so. It was beautiful and amazing and quite silly.

To add to that, anybody is threatening a new learning-curve thread (or GavJ-debate, as I prefer to remember it) whenever they ask a semi-technical question, receive an answer that might not be satisfying, and then continue with, "I see your point, but, REASONS!"

Not a very widely used trope in the places where "Mc" or "Mac" names originated (Scotland and Ireland). It mostly seems to belong to certain aspects of US pop culture. A trope is still a trope even if not used much, but it is not a common trope.

Does anybody know what the origins of that trope are? Obviously characters with Scottish/Irish ancestry, or just using a "mc" name to imitate a Scotsman (silly names like Hamish McHaggis) do not count.

And, to me, this appeared to be the deflection point keeping the thread alive. You accepted the answer, but deflected it.

However I must add that I don't think you intended to pull a GavJ-debate on us, or that this is even one, but from a first read it looked pretty similar. I'm going to be very explicit, I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but I thought it might help the situation if you could see the similarities.

And now that I've thoroughly made an ass of myself, I will add I have nothing to add on the origin of the trope.

The discussion has now turned to whether the name Urist Uristurister is accurate; it seems not to be, so I asked if Urist Uristurist is possible, or can a dwarven name contain repeated words.

Pare down your Dwarven language file (don't just change all of the nouns to urist) and gen a new world.

That is a very good suggestion, though if nobody can remember a dwarf with repeated names, it seems unlikely anyway.

The wiki needs changing, in that case, so future players do not think impossible names are possible.

Quote from: the wiki
This article or section has been rated D for Dwarf. It may include witty humour, not-so-witty humour, bad humour, in-jokes, and references to the Bay12 forums. Don't believe everything you read, and if you miss some of the references, don't worry. It was inevitable.

but that being said, it's a wiki!  so go ahead and change it.

Quickly opened up DF in adv mode. 40.03, because that's the newest I have.  :'(

The most Urist I could get is "Urist Uristurist Uristurist Urist", which is "Dagger Daggerdagger the Dagger-Dagger of Daggers", you can switch "dagger" to "daggers" before the 'the' and before  'of', but the 'of Daggers' can only been in the plural (singular and plural are the same in Dwarven). I don't know of any rules preventing this from happening in normal play, but I guess that still needs a test. Come to think, I've never seen the same word repeated twice in a name, so it's worth a check.

Test 2:
Deleted all but dark, dank and dagger from the language file (left some variation just in case it doesn't like only one word for whatever reason).
Found like 10-15 "Urist Uristurist" names in legends as the first dwarves, seems like only goblins use "dark" and "dank", that's strange...
However, goblins do NOT use "Daggerdagger" only "Darkdagger" "Dankdagger" "Daggerdark" and "Daggerdank", with filter I did not find "Ulspaulspa", which would be "Daggerdagger". It seems that the game does NOT allow repetition if it is in any way avoidable.

That's the verdict: Urist UristSOMETHING or Urist SOMETHINGurist are possible in normal play, but Urist Uristurist seems to only appear when the Dwarves are robbed of their entire vocabulary (except for Dark and dank, which they just won't use for names, probably a belief-thing)

I shall seek another dwarven word to replace the second urist. I shall also change the wiki - it may say "don't believe everything you read", but that "fact" is a lie and not even funny enough to merit staying.

Yeah, wiki shouldn't contain false informations unless they are April 1st jokes.
Or at least they should be marked "D" for dorfs.

Even under D for Dwarf, that should not have been a "fact".

I suppose whoever wrote that thought it was true, since it sort of seems like it might be if you don't look *too* close.  As you mention a purposely false "fact" would have been funnier or something.

Why would anybody have got the idea of "urister", though, if the word does not exist?

I thought of changing my name to "Urist Sharpdagger", but the dwarven language does not seem to have a word for sharp, so "Bluntdagger" it is...

What is the dwarven word for blunt? Copying from the language file gave  "unƒl". This does not seem like a dwarven name. Is "Unil", or a similar word with an accent on the I (I presume dwarven accents are tonal or something like that) the correct translation?

Unâl with an "a circumflex".

You get the ƒ (florins) symbol if you view it with ANSI instead of ASCII encoding, i guess?

If you want Urist McUrist, the closest thing to Mc is Child, thus Urist Tilaturist.  Other options include Urist Bonsothurist (dagger godforsaken-dagger), Urist Othoburist (dagger stupid-dagger), Urist Duradurist (dagger beard-dagger) and my recommendations Urist Uristtetist (dagger dagger-flimsy) or Urist Uristanist (dagger dagger-ignite).

I had to switch my encoding to what Notepad++ calls "OEM-US" to see the characters properly.  The Windows character map tool calls it "DOS: United States".  It turns out that none of the words I picked had accented characters anyway.

I think I shall go for Urist Tilaturist, since that links back nicely to the start of the thread.

Is it possible to change username?
