Good catch. Yes, you can give a name to the horse.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

It was a nice animal, and I was happy to own such a reliable mount of my very own.
(Gold -75)

I mounted up and left my village. I didn't know it at the time, but my magic would end up greatly extending my horse's lifespan. I promised myself that I would not eat my new horse. I decided to name it Dog.

Needless to say, Cat, my dog, came with me.

I had a nice little party before I left. We had it in the newly rebuilt tavern since the old one had been burned down during the elf raid. My parents didn't even say goodbye, which was typical of our relationship. I gave up the life of a scribe and left for the Academy the next day.

The trip to Tornassa went well. I spent the first day as a tourist, just seeing the sights. King Norbert and Queen Audrey's castle was impressive; I stared up at the towers, hoping to catch a glimpse of Prince Gareth, who was now 25, or Princess Emily, who was two years younger. I didn't see any royalty that day. I thought I was going to have trouble with the city guard at first, but besides them keeping a close eye on me, there was no difficulty.

The next morning, I went to the Academy. This was where all of the great mages had learned their skills, including the royal advisor, Fraledan. The Academy was financed by the Mage Guild, which was nice since it meant I didn't have to pay anything.

I stood at the entrance to the Academy, uncertain as to how to proceed.

"Why have you come?"

The voice came from a little old man sitting on a rock next to the doors leading into the Academy. He was very small, and his bald head made him seem vulnerable.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I am Master Durgan, the doorkeeper to the Academy. Why have you come?"

1) I told him that I wanted to learn magic.
2) I told him that I wanted to learn Necromancy.
3) I told him that I wanted to learn everything.
4) I told him it was none of his business and to let me in.

I think we are a dumb young moron who is overly enthusiastic before the harsh reality of the world hits him over the side of his head.

3.

I think we are a vaguely world weary troll on the cusp of finally shaking off the shackles of her former life. We've started with little and gotten so far, why not take the world?

He nodded wisely. "A well-rounded education is important for a wizard. Magical knowledge is important, but the other disciplines will be invaluable."

He smiled warmly at me and led me to the testing chamber.
(Arcana +5, Agriculture +5, Diplomacy +5, Economics +5, Geography +5, History +5, Religion +5, Smithing +5, Warcraft +5)

Master Durgan placed his hands on my head and concentrated. After a few moments, he nodded his bald head in approval. "Yes, the spark is within you. Welcome to the Academy."

"Doesn't it bother you that I'm a troll?" I asked Master Durgan.

"You seem different to me," he said honestly. "More importantly, you have the spark. It would be very nice to have a troll graduate from the Academy for the first time."

I was given a room in the Academy, which included a bed, a desk, and a chair. It was very sparse, but it was my own. I was also given a schedule of classes. My training as a wizard had begun.

Although I learned many things at the Academy, my favourite class was…

1) …Alchemy.
2) …Conjuration.
3) …Divination.
4) …Enchantment.
5) …Illusion.
6) …Summoning.
7) …Transmutation.

...something else? I learned that Necromancy wasn't studied, as it was considered an evil magic. Healing also wasn't taught in a specific class, having been considered mostly the domain of priests.

8) Healing was my true gift, even though it wasn't officially taught at the Academy.
9) Necromancy was where the true power lay.
