Completely new fighting mechanics?
« on: December 30, 2014, 02:18:42 am »

I stopped playing this release around version 8 or something and I had no idea things had changed so much...

A weremonitor attacked me which was a first. I sent my untrained hammerdwarves at it and they had no discipline problems, just ran at him and occasionally hit him(guess this is the not hitting enemies bug).

But then lots of dwarves swarmed him and tried to kill him. All civilians who walked nearby including children ran to the weremonitor. They didn't strike him - again, probably the bug - but man I'd never seen dwarves do that. At some point it reverted to goblin and ran away and all my dwarves chased it around until it hit a cage trap.

Is any of this normal?

It sounds counterintuitive, but try not to zerg rush the enemy? Sometimes lower numbers help to prevent that non-attacking bug from happening, at least in my case.

Yeah but I didn't order the zerg rush, it was a mob of civilians. I didn't wanna put them in a burrow because I heard that's what causes the military to not attack and as soon as they saw the beastie, they went for it

The mob was probably caused by oversensitive self defense mechanics.

Or you could just let the children roam free and natural selection will take care of them.
I'm now picturing an elf wrestler trying to suplex my battlements.

6 people got infected and became weremonitors soon after. There has to be a middle ground between an all-out dwarf swarm and everyone running away like it happened a few versions back...

Well technically that wouldn't make sense, as you either run away the instant you see it (you're scared) or go to kill it (if you're not). You don't just stay there, saying, well, he looks like a nice chap! Sure, it could happen irl, but in the setting of the middle ages, a sociopathically uncaring/mentally disabled individual would be ostracized from society.

Indeed, it's called a "fight or flight" response for a reason...

As for militias, they generally don't have problems from low discipline until their fellow dwarves start dying... Just keep them on duty or training for awhile and they'll get better...

It just seems to me that civilians shouldn't so easily jump into battle with a dangerous beast unarmed while the militia are handling it. Surely it could use some tweaking.

The funny thing is that civilians have nearly greater bloodlust than the military.
