Goblins never come...
« on: December 29, 2014, 01:41:06 pm »

So I've been playing the new versions (40 and up, keeping up with the updates) and I have embarked so many times now and built a fully functioning fortress with plenty of food and booze, etc. And every time, I never get goblins to show up. Now, I checked for them specifically before embarking, every time, and yet they never come. My current fort is 12 years old now and still no sign of them. I've built fully trapped hallways, drowning chambers, all kinds of experiments in all these embarks, and they've all gone completely to waste. Getting really frustrated at this point, and I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

I think this is a common problem. I think it became worse (from a fortess mode perspective) sometime during the late autumn, when some kind of pathing was changed. Goblins have to be in some kind of range that I think is shorter than the logic used to generate the statement on embark uses, they are supposedly blocked or delayed by mountains in between their city and your embark, and are said to attack others instead of you if those other parties are closer. Another logic was changed to stop aggressors from always winning, which means that they will no longer steamroll any opposition in between you and them and then continue on.

It's probably the best thing to do, and them being at war with you probably helps (I don't know if that means larger forces, more frequent forces, or anything else, though).

Check in the [c]ivilization menu to see if a goblin civ is at war with your's.

Or you could just let the children roam free and natural selection will take care of them.

If there's been no sign of them as was said then they won't show up on the civilization menu. Civilizations only show up once you've had some, any, interaction with them.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

 I guess.
Would snatchers count? Were there any of those?

Any interaction counts, so yes even a baby snatcher that a dwarf spots right as they enter and they leave immediately.

Nope, nothing. I even left all my defenses open just to see if I'd get an ambush or something, nothing.

I guess you just have been "lucky" No matter where I embark I get a goblin siege nearly every year.

Once they come, they come every year (somtimes twice per year).

I haven't seen any either in three (game) years. Are there ways of attracting them? I think making lots of gold things works, but I'm not sure.

Are you using old world? There was bug who was unbinding armies from civs, so They was 4ever sleeping. Problem still exist in old worlds (They need time to create new armies, bugged out armies are still buggy and sleepy).

In my fortress dwarves are dying from old age.
Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

Nikow, what do you mean with "old world": one that has a history longer than X years, or one generated with versions 0.40.X-0.40.Y?
Since I'm still on 0.40.19 (latest supported by PyLNP), I'd certainly be interested if it's bugged in that respect.

Not sure if that's true, I'm pretty sure the update fixes the broken armies in your world if there were any. If it didn't, wouldn't the errorlog mention it?

In my .22 world, the errorlog was filled with the "camp forever" message, but I haven't seen the message so far in my carried-over world to .23 .
