Well, I mined out the roof by mistake.
Now no matter what I built the tile below the mined out tile is always light.

It was a pond and for this reason it would be frozen forever.

You see, dwarves fear the sun because it's so radioactive, it spreads its radiatioactive glow to everything it shines upon. Dwarven immigrants, including the founders of your fort, travel overland and, in the time of their travels, build a tolerance to it. If sealed underground, their livers, with so much alcohol passing through it, eventually process out the radiation, and the tolerance goes with it. That is why, when a dwarf sees the radioactive sunlight for the first time in years, they are sickened. It's radiation sickness.

Stone and soil does not have this property, and so, even a moment's sunshine irradiates it so much that it gives off a glow, rendering it forever "light".
