After playing 3 different forts through the end of year 2 in the current build without ever getting a human caravan I am getting a bit frustrated.

What symbols / colors on the world map indicate human settlements? How close do you have to be to get caravans? And (most importantly) is there any way to tell whether they are connected without playing through 2 years of game time?
