https://code.google.com/p/chengband/w/listDeveloper posts under the name 'Chris'. He does alot of releases, but isn't good about posting on roguebasin. HE generally makes a thread on Angband variants for every major release then adds a post for minor releases in the threads.
There are several threads in the angband variant forum about the game. This game combines several angband variants and has the most features of any angband variant I have seen. It has a vast number of race/class combos. If you liked Zangband, this is a continuation of it with alot of features.
Recommended newbies builds
Vampire/Ninja: Very good newbie builds. Vampires 'eat' with Vampiric Drain which generally does more damage than your melee through most of the game. Great to kill uniques with it.
Ninjas rely on stealth and vampires don't need torches. One issue with them is they take alot of damage in daylight and can't function. This is easy to get around. Each town has atleast 1 shop that you can change from day/night for a nominal fee. Ninjas get 'make darkness' skill at level 1. so if your stuck in daylight. you can cast this, then recall to a dungeon. eat mobs and sleep to pass time. I
Ninja Skills: (doesnt' use mana, but you take damage if you fail) :
http://www.kmc.gr.jp/~henkma/heng-e/class/ninja/index.htmlSuccess rate goes up as you level. so does damage
At lower levels you get darkness, detect near (detect stairs/monsters), phase door (hide in leaves), teleport (absconding),ancient knowledge (Identify)
and hide in flames(teleport and do area attack that scales. very valuable).

Chris's recommended race/class combos:
http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=7050&page=5I like monster races at the moment. If you know the bestiary well, then you could try a Possessor. Otherwise, Hounds are versatile, if a bit weak; dragons are very strong but start a bit slow; trolls are a pure melee play, but giants have a smidgen of distance attacks; but beholders are my all time favorite. I'm really overdue for another beholder!
For normal player race/class combos, there are just so many to do the question justice. It depends what style you like:
Rogues have good stealth and mediocre magic. High Elf is everybody's favorite choice.
Samurai have strong and flavorful melee and are a Hengband classic. I like Nibelungs.
Maulers and Bloodknights are strong melee characters with a few abilities. Pick a race with decent device skills.
Cavalry and Beastmasters can ride monsters as pets which is good fun.
Martial arts are among my favorites: Try a Hobbit monk!
In general, if you are looking for stuff to try, you can just search the Poschengband ladder here on oook for ideas. Have fun!
