Clothing question
« on: December 26, 2014, 08:26:24 pm »

Dorfs need at least 3 pieces of clothes right?

So, if I produce enough cloak, trousers and shoes for everybody, do I still need to manually dump those x(items)x to prevent bad thoughts (i.e., using dfhack, or using the military uniform trick)?

You shouldn't AFAIK. Dwarves should exchange their clothes for higher quality ones automatically, and store their old worn out ones in their cabinets/chests.
Not sure if cloaks count as an upper body clothing piece, but I guess they would.

I haven't confirmed that this is still the case, but in .34.x at least dwarves who dropped worn clothing in their bedrooms, dining rooms or offices would accumulate infinite amounts of clothing over time because that clothing wouldn't ever lose its owner status.  You had to forbid it for I think two in game weeks before it would lose its ownership status and get hauled to a refuse pile.

Clothing dropped in hallways or any other area would get hauled to the refuse pile correctly after a brief period.

Granted, if you have it you could just use DFhack's cleanowned command to fix that particular issue.

Is there a way to clean their owner status without actually dumping them?
Autodump currently can't seem to dump item from their containers, instead will leave forbidden items in the cabinets.

I recall I tried autodump destroy before, but forgot to confirm if I had enough replacements. And half of my fort began running around naked. :P

Owned items in owned area remain a dwarf's property forever, unless you forbid or auto-disown them. Dwarfs will however not accumulate infinite amounts of clothing, because storage in their rooms is limited to open floor plus cabinet capacity; about 30 items when you have a 3x3 room containing bed, chest and one cabinet.

If any other types of clothing show up on your map (e.g. goblin clothes), dwarfs will run out and claim them to fill slots you're not making clothes for (caps, mittens etc.). Those may be worn until they fall apart and will produce unhappy thoughts all the way. Forbidding them when they're already worn doesn't help, either: you can only force equipment off a dwarf by ordering them to wear a military uniform that excludes the items; and by some cheap DFHack tricks.

cleanowned
Usually I just use cleanowned scattered x followed by autodump destroy, but it can clean the cabinets too (cleanowned all x) if you want.

This only works for DF Hack.
