Why can't it be JUST GRASS?!
« on: December 24, 2014, 08:37:23 pm »

So, i've been into pixel art recently, slowly improving, but still, i'm VERY bad at shading and dithering and all that stuff. Anyway, i've been trying to be grass, the arch-nemesis of the young pixel artists, i guess.

In the first one i did vomit in grass, alright, at least it's grass. The second one looks like some tile that should be used on a farm, not the one i wanted. The last one...i don't even know, looks like a soccer field grass, but i don't want soccer field grass, i WANT NORMAL GRASS.

Anyway, any tips on how make properly a normal grass tile? I have looked up on some online tutorials, but i couldn't find one that helped me. I tried to use some games as reference, didn't help.

No, what I mean is you don't want symmetrical. You want haphazard.

grass is SUPER EVIL and i can confirm that

It is also haphazard, although randomly strewing pixels all over the tile won't give you anything nice. As seen in this tutorial which is pretty good, you're probably actually going to want to simplify it as opposed to drawing EVERY SINGLE STRAW. Fortunately, the human brain is really good at filling in the blanks, so you need not do much more than occasionally remind it that hey, this is grass yo! In this case, this is done by placing tufts of visible grass on an otherwise blank green background.

and to hopefully demonstrate that i'm not just speaking bollocks i will now try it myself

Ish? Not perfect, obviously, but i believe it kind of gets the point across. Basically, it's about exploiting the human minds ability to fill out blanks, since you don't have enough room to show all the details. That, and making all the details per pixel is something that takes an ungodly amount of time and effort.

Take a look at how old Pokémon does grass. Kinda what Shook did, but really it's just splotchy green-tinted noise.

This thread prompted me to try to make some grass tiles of my own. Came out decent enough I suppose.

Well, good then.

Basically the way to do grass like that is to draw a bunch of straws with the brightest colour. Then shade away from those straws vertically. Then just fill in the remaining area(semi-randomly, just do what looks okay) and add darker highlights. If it looks too busy, then remove some of the straws and make a darker area. If it looks too flat try adding some more highlights.
