Marksdwarves are impossible
« on: December 23, 2014, 05:58:05 pm »

Any tips for making marksdwarves NOT act hopelessly stupid?  They don't pick up ammo!  They go to stations with empty quivers (yes, the ammo is set to metal bolts and I have metal bolts).  Plus, they charge into battle instead of getting more ammo, which gets them killed.

Are your marksdwarves in a separate squad and do they have the hunting labor disabled?

Check whether your existing ammo is claimed by your hunters and then make extra ammo to compensate.  Station them up a level from the battlefield behind fortifications if you don't want them charging.

Thanks.  The ammo must have been claimed by hunters.  I removed the hunters' ammo altogether and that allowed the marksdwarves to use it.

How do you see if ammo is claimed?  It was sitting in a stockpile, so I was surprised to see it was already claimed.

You should be able to see on the military / squad / ammunition screen, probably the same place that you took the ammo away from the hunters' "squad".  There's a column there that shows specifically which stacks of ammo the squad has claimed.  You can also sort of tell on the stocks screen if you have high enough bookkeeping accuracy to see all the listed ammo, because claimed ammo is a different color, I think.

it's true claimed ammo stays in the stockpile, unless you have a barracks for the squad with a lot of storage chests.  Hunters don't have a barracks of course so their claimed ammo always stays in stockpiles.

I'll check it out. Thanks for all your help! :)

I still had one dwarf who thought that a suicidal charge was the best idea (I'm not sure why) but the marksdwarves have ammo, now and I can progress.

I assign marksdwarves wood bolts for training and steel ones for war, and though they always shoot bolts they sometimes shoot wooden ones in war.

Make sure they all have quivers.

What works for me is assigning them to squads with absolutely no melee weapons, although i don't assign them quivers they do it themselves.

Or you could just let the children roam free and natural selection will take care of them.

Don't bother with uniforms nonsense. Manually equip each dwarf's items and set to replace clothing. They then have no chance to ruin your plans.

Or do bother with uniforms, and make sure you have the necessary available. Also I think replacing clothing can lead to indecent clothing-related sadness, which should be borne in mind.

I think replace clothing works better. If you don't use it, it may take a long time for your dwarves to get equipped. Make absolutely sure you have all the armor they need though otherwise they'll walk around naked for a long time and tantrum.

Dwarf therapist said that dwarves were not putting on some items of armour when clothing was not replaced. They put on all their armour when set to replace clothing. Of course, this is daft, since armour was worn over clothing and would be very uncomfortable otherwise, but dwarves are too stupid to understand that.
