Sub 5fps quest
« on: December 23, 2014, 01:56:29 pm »

My last 40.13 game got boring, 200 dwarfs and no fighting
8*8 embark I upped my miners to 35 and took out a Z level
I couldn't get below 10fps steady, some drops sure. But. Not steady.

So 40.19...with starter pack
EMBARK
7*7
medium world 1050 history
heavily forested, thick vegitation,minerals everywhere
Wilderness
Advanced world gen removed werecritters and tweaked caverns
1000 POP limit (5 kids)

System (2+yrs old) self built
I5 2500k 3.3 ghz NOT OC'd
8 gb ram
Windows 7 s pk 1
Nvidia gtx 570 fermi
Aoc 2243w hd monitor

Purpose of test is to see how many Shorties
it takes to get SUB 5 FPS STEADY!!!!
Test is 5 years in....106 dwarfs(6!!kids)

First wave got vampire (thanks therapist) got him into
A squad and into a room just inside fort. Locked in. STILL
BECAME MAYOR!?
All dwarfs get 6x6 rooms have them in 2 rows in 10 room blocks
200 rooms made so far masterwork or exeptional beds And doorss for all
100 beds 85 doors already made for next expansion phase
26 miners.  Six +5
8 carpenters one +5
34 farmers no legendary
1 each +5 mason stonecrafter
1 +5 armoursmith cranking out steel nonstop
More food than I can  process 11897!!!!
216 other animals.
1 100*100 stone process level (metal/stone work)
Fort is built to be ineffecient to keep dwarfs busy haulin
 STILL 30 to 40 fps

Ill report back when (not IF) I get steady below 5 fps OR reach
1000 dwarfs

What's your RAM like specifically? I hear a lot of people having trouble with FPS blame the RAM usage...if your RAM is fancy, you might have more trouble reaching a consistent 5 :P

If it's your goal to just have a sub-5-fps save for the kicks, check out some of the dwarfputing megaprojects (the game of life comes to mind.)

Ram is G Skill ddr3. Pc3-12800(800 mhz)

Not sure how fancy it is, but the windows
experience rates it at 7.8. Best is 7.9 ;)

A few other things

My box isn't hooked to the net.
No antivirus
No firewall
Built for another 1 core game called
X3 Terran conflict
after building it I followed a thread to
A windows optimization for a 1 core flight sim.
I killed about 40 things in windows.... almost 20
WAY DOWN in HKey ROOT...real !!FUN!! With a brand
New 1200 dollar box one wrong click....
Been playing DF for a year now and its never crashed,
So I musta done something right.  Or I'm playing wrong?

I know the fps killers...like a river to the magma.
That's not what I'm after.
I'm gonna try keeping stockpiles few AND small. Letting rocks
Lay around and such, mainly worried about clothesmaking
I might have to bump seed limit up to 3_400(200 now)

So you want to know what's the max population you can reach before you suffer a fps death?
Well, with my older computer I have made a fortress in 2013 with 560 dwarves before breaching the circus tent and going down fighting to the last man dwarf, with everyone but kids fighting. Dump all the useless stuff into magma and don't produce too much food/booze, since you want to keep it, but soon the numbers start getting ridiculous. disabling weather or temperature has a huge impact too. Don't leave huge chunks of open area between working places. If you mine out a layer, wall off it after.

Thanks for the tips, going for dwarves, not..stuff is hard!!
Trying to use/make stuff with least return! !
Ie: ore,coke,rock/rock,pigiron,coke//steel
     Rock/crafts/trade away(6 +5's chew up rock QUICK!!)
After the tree cutting thing above, its now barrels/charcoal/ash/bins/lye/soap!! 23 thousand logs is ALOT!!

323 animals to kill// females first!! Gelding is for sissies.

Anyone know how much "stuff" a trade depot holds?!

Prepping for the slaughter, I made 70 bin leather pile.
Why is eveyone going outside? HOLY ARMOK its leathet, frpm depot!!
O.k. I got room, dig space for 135 bin pile. Oh no frigging way.filled
33 more? Filled it,. Really!
256 bin pile, lets see you fill THAT!! 96 IN IT!!
234 Leather bins came OFF my depot!!

So now I'm making a few more piles cuz Armok only knows the crap I've bought in 8 yrs that "didn't" have a pile!!!

Dig a bunch of twisty interconnecting multi-Z tunnelswith a few huge chambers,  place a dump at the bottom of the complex, tell dwarves to dump a bunch of crafts down there constantly. Bonus credit if you make a different group haul it all back up.

That oughta make a dent in the FPS.

It seems depots are just a bigger version of the traditional quantum stockpile, and they amplify it to make room for the ridiculous number of rock crafts you make.

I know there are *MANY* dwarfy ways to get to 1fps!
Priorities kinda changed, maybe, see above please.
The quest is getting steady sub 5fps using. *dwarfs* 1000 of them!
Yea the trade depot tis a strange beast.
Getting 15/20 fps with sub 10 dips
200 dwarfs(10!!kids!!) Awaiting next wave.
animal slaughter continues, very slowly.

It should be easy enough to start on a beach and connect the top of the caverns to the bottom of the oceans.

Of course, then you're measuring seconds per frame, so this may not be what you wanted....

I believe # of stockpiles was proven to be the culprit.  Thousands of items can exist if they are within just a few stockpiles.  However, if you create several stockpiles that are all set to give/take from another... you can have a whole circle of endless hauling jobs.  Its best done with wood I think.   No bin/barrel business and not to heavy (to create the most jobs).  So 10 Wood stockpiles all set to give to the next in line and take from the one before it.  Tons of jobs created and hauling done.

Low migration waves are getting old fast!!

Less than 40 per YEAR!!
Sub 10
Sub 10
Sub 20
Its gotta be the child cap of 5, or that I've got no military!
I'm about to do some serious recruiting and find out.
Higher skilled ones getting specialized, useless ones drafted.

Cutting those trees was a *very* bad thing.
Didn't hurt fps a bit....but 40.19 hauling is ..IS INSANE!!
7*7 map....know how many they walk BY??
I can't even keep the outside furnices stocked..grrr
And I wont even mentiin the inside carpenter, linked to a fy
Full 1 just outside the door.
slaughter of birds/dogs/cats complete.
Thining the llamas/alpacas started.
Most mined rock gone.
Most minerals smelted into bars.
Food gathering/buying stopped.
Cooking/brewing continues. As does cooking brews!
Fps between 15/20 , killing things helped a bit,not as many dipss.
Am doubling (whole game) at least every trade, I buy 10k,they get.get 20k at least, still few migrants.
The quest continues.
