TEST FEF

From the annals of "Historic Compendium; Vol VII", 20;20:

"In a land of wars and revenge, each fueled by naught but human emotion and folly, there are stars the shine into existence to merely fade within moments. Oft said that the brighter its glow, the less it lasts, that to survive one must shine dim and hope to not catch notice. But this is not the fates for those who wish to change the world, for how can one hope to change what doesn't notice them?

Here, our story takes us to what would for many be a small event, yet from this, the flap of a bird's wings, would a a gale come to overrun the whole land. It all started with a Writ of Payment, by a duke hailing from..."

From the official and infamous "Writ of Payment", sent to a group of then unknown mercenaries:

"... the keep and the surrounding areas are to be purged of the upstart's forces, their presence a pox upon the land and its people. The method is your choosing, but know that they are hostile and armed. Believed to be deserters that grew into mercenaries, they must of seen the abandoned keep and decided to take over. For the completion of this task, and your discretion, you shall be paid a sum of one thousand draks each, all of verified and printed king's gold.

Signed, Your Benefactor"

The job's shady, but if it pays out right, this could set the mercenaries up for quite a while. The particularly mean lean streak hasn't done much to wet their apatite. The travel was brisk and short, with little troubles on the roads. As the neared their destination, more and more they see signs of villagers moving away, often the opposite direction of where they were heading. Questions revealed little, beyond the fact that they considered themselves the lucky ones.

It doesn't take long until they see the keep, almost shrouded in the hills and forests, but never the less it still stands strong and proud against its surroundings despite its age. Hearing a commotion from the left, the mercenaries see a scene play out in a small hamlet just a short jaunt away...

"...empty too. This house is also empty, everything gone!" An axeman protested, just exiting a house. He snarled at a shivering man being pressed on all sides by soldiers, each soldier bedecked in a uniform that doesn't fit any royalty that the mercenaries have seen before.

"I-I, I t-told you they left!" The villager sputtered out, and in response getting a painful bash from the pommel of a sword-wielding soldier.

"That's a lie. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Where are they? We've had a scout go missing here, and we know he didn't just wander off!" The sword-totting soldier snarled, grabbing the man by the back of his shirt roughly and spinning the poor villager around.

Before more could be said, a woman, who appeared to be the leader of the group, cut both off. "Leave him alone for now, there's still one more house to check. His medicine will prove more useful in his hands than mixed with his blood on the floor anyhow." She dismissively waved the two off, turning her attention to the last house, its doors barred shut.

"Break it down."

...

"You see that?" A soldier leaned on his halberd, looking down the road at the new arrivals. The mage nodded, while the axeman stayed in the trees.

"Seems to be the all of them."

"Best warn the boss, they look armed." The mage nodded and moved to head back to the keep.

One of the warriors striding up was clad in bright red armour, a bold warning to his enemies. Even more strangely, his skin was shining grey metal, and his hair was bristly like black wire. A thick bundle of javelins was tried to his back.

"And saying it matters is an overstatement. If you can slay any mages, I doubt the enemy can even scratch me."

Shirou smiled, and pulled an arrow from the quiver upon his back. "At any rate, we won't be outnumbered for very long, I assure you. I'll be right back."

With a smile and an arrow, Shirou's horse didn't need much persuasion to get moving. The only warning the soldiers got they were under attack was the sound of hooves, and the faint plucking of a bow string. Two arrows struck true, striking the soldier approaching the house in the back and sending him stumbling. The others quickly turned around, weapons brandished and shouting in surprise at the ambush.

The leader looked outraged. "Intruders! Ambushers! Quick, to arms, to arms!" She snarled at the villager. "So this was your plan?! A trap?!"

"I-I-I swear, I don't know who they are!"

"If you want to live, tend to his wounds." She warned, jerking a thumb at the stricken soldier steadying himself and trying to reach the arrows firmly planted in his back.

The stricken soldier didn't need to suffer for long though, as out of the brush and down the road trotted a robed man. His goal in sight, the monk conjured as he moved, deft movements of his hand and tome forming odd sigils in the air, filled with color drained from the surroundings.

Satisfied with the buildup, with a flick of his wrist Erik sent a multicolored ray of light towards his target. It struck the soldier dead on in the back of his head. The man didn't even have time to shout in pain before all went dark, the soldier falling lifeless to the ground. The other soldiers glared at the monk, their comrade in arms dead. But they were a little put off by the strange aura that now seems to surround the monk.

Moving in unison, Blake and Ferrum stepped up to the plate and assaulted the soldiers. With a glint of steel, Blake thrust at the fighter once, twice, three times, each time the fighter just barely responding with his own parries and dodges, each time the strikes growing closer and closer. It was obvious to the poor man that he was badly outmatched here, seeking to try to hide further into the trees. With a whish, a steel javelin stopped that attempt in its tracks, thudding right in front of the soldier, blocking his egress.

Distracted, Blake saw his opportunity. There was no noise, the only warning was a sharp pain as the steel penetrated the fighter, Blake driving it in the man's chest. With a flourish, he withdrew it and stabbed again, and in unison with the stab came a wet thud as a second javelin flew and struck the man solidly in the leg.

It doesn't look like it would take much more to fell the fighter, the soldier wavering as is from bloodloss and trauma.

Alessa looked around and counted the innumerable men in red: she was glad that the uniform of their foes was color coded for convenience; while it did a good job of telling the unspoken 'this is who I work for' in varying tones, it did all the better to note who to hit in a multi-way battle.

Better still, when alone.

Move to I-25, hide in trees ._.

Keeping their mind on the prize, Dany moved into the cover of the trees. Seeing the fighter distracted, Dany saw an opportunity. It only took one, with a steady hand and a sharp eye, the archer sent the arrow into the air. The fighter didn't even hear it, not until it struck him in the chest with a loud thud. The soldier looked numbly at the feathered shaft sticking out of where his heart should be, before slowly falling over, having had enough. His lasts breathes were ragged and painful.

ENEMY PHASE

"'Spared?'" The thief-leader mocked. "Where do you even think you are! We'll make the ground red with your blood for the lives you've took! You've all made a terrible mistake this day!"

There were screams of outrage and anger at the sight of their fallen comrades, and in but a moment, the mercenaries were brought to bear by the enemies. The leader snarled, shouting for their heads as she ordered the charge. The three soldiers on the road cursed at the rapid assault, the spear-wielding soldier urging the mage to hurry as he joined the fray. His axe friend however, took a sharp one eighty and headed away from the conflict, towards the river.

Within but a moment, the enemies converged upon the man who took one of their own. In a rush of steel and emotion, a sword shimmered as it cut through the air and blood was drawn, but the blade noticeably shivered as it crossed the strange aura around the mage. An axe went wide, seeming to almost redirect itself on its course to the monk, but with a soft plink of a taut string, the arrow didn't lose its mark and had little trouble penetrating the strange shield, driving itself into the mage's side.

In defiance of being struck, Erik took a ragged breath, and with its exhale, sigils began rapidly appearing around the mage and the surroundings once more lost its brighter colors, grass and the freshly lost blood losing its shine. With a gesture, there was a brief corona of vivid colors that expelled from the very same strange aura that pushed against his assailants, each shouting in pain as the strange light burned and tore at them.

Nearby, Blake had a similar struggle. Emerging from the trees where the cooling fighter now lays, an armored soldier with a spear charged the fencer. But yet, even with the soldier's reach, it couldn't match the fencer's speed as he darted around the first blow and responded in kind with a thrust in a gap of the man's armor.

Enraged at being made a fool of, the soldier attacked again and this time found purchase, his halberd catching the fencer roughly in the gut, its metal sinking deep but thankfully missing anything vital. Not through yet, the fencer gave a second stab in the same spot, driving his blade even deeper. Had it just been an inch further, the soldier would of surely lost his life, saved only by his prior attack pushing the fencer off balance.

With little warning, Blake looked past the soldier, much to the engaged man's confusion. With little remark, the fencer disengaged and dashed behind a tree in cover. Shortly after, green streaks of magic flew past the soldier and smashed into the tree, slicing clean through the trunk and toppling it with a loud thud. Yet, even before the tree started to fall, Blake walked out from behind a different one no more than a good five to six feet from the soon-to-be stump. The mage looked on in confusion: "What."

With a curse at things not going the way she thought they would, the thief quickly hurried to her soldier's side and forced a blue vial upon one of them, getting them to drink it. Their wounds visibly mended, looking relieved.

Meanwhile, the spear-wielding soldier from the road moved to join his companions, striking at the wayward thief. This turned out to be a terrible idea however, as with his charge he hit nothing but the trunk of a tree as Alessa easily evaded her clumsy adversary. In but a flash of a moment, she thrust at the soldier once, yet with a scream of pain, the stuck soldier was stabbed twice, both daggers moving quicker than the blink of an eye as they easily found holes in his armor and found purchase past his clothes to bore holes in his side. The soldier shouted in pain and anger as he finally disloged his halberd, bringing it to bear once more on the thief.

ALLY/NEUTRAL PHASE

From behind the enemy soldiers, there came a rustling noise from the closed house that rose over even the sound of combat. The noise grew louder and louder until the few not currently fighting turned to look at it with confusion. With a sudden thunk, the door flung open and out charged several villagers, wielding from the looks of it old military weapons, common items, or other ragtag items. Each of them trail a green armband, the fabric ripped and appearing to have been hastily tied on.

Trailing behind them must be the leader of this militia, a large man who carried no weapon. It didn't look like he probably needed them. He closed the door behind him, and with a soft thud it latched closed. He dashed to the wayward villager after, crying out to his ragtag group as he did.

"CHARGE! TAKE BACK OUR HOMES! THESE WRETCHES WILL NOT DRIVE US AWAY WITHOUT A FIGHT, KEEP THEM AWAY FROM THE HOUSE!"

The timid villager, now bereft of guards, hurried to the militia captain. He was quickly given a green armband like the others. "Sorry I got caught boss..."
"You're alive, that's all that matters to me. Now come on, we have home and family to protect!"
The villager nodded, sneaking a worried glance at the militia-woman totting a spear.

The first of the surprise attack came from the sword-wielding militiawoman, her thin sword striking out at the archer swiftly and cutting into the already wounded man. He grunted in pain as the steel cleaved cloth and flesh, responding in kind with a swiftly drawn dagger that streaked towards the overextended swordswoman. She tried to move out of the way, but such only met partial success as the blade moved from her heart to instead her arm, sinking deep and coming out with a twisting motion that cause a cry of pain.

Angered at the harm of one of his militia, the commander swung at the archer, his meaty fist flying dangerously close to the archer, who similarly stabbed the man. The captain didn't even attempt to dodge, shrugging of the dagger blow as, with the help of the newly made militiaman, swung again. This time the archer wasn't so lucky, the fist catching the soldier clear on the face and with a sickening snap, broke several bones from the impact. The archer went down without even a groan.

From the trees, the embarrassed soldier who engaged Alessa soon was surprised by an attack from the trees, focusing too much on the thief to even notice the man with an iron rod having snuck up behind him. With a shout of rage and strength, the rod went down and crashed against the soldier's helmet, visibly denting it and almost sprawling the man on the ground. Reflexively, the soldier swung his halberd swiftly at the new assailant, the blade of the polearm catching the militiaman in the side. He grunted with pain, but the attack was wild and inaccurate, not causing too much damage.

In front of the house, with a twang of the bow string an arrow was sent towards a swordsman from one the bowman among the militia, the arrow finding purchase in the invading soldier's thigh. Seeing an opening from the wound, the spearwoman quickly capitalized on the opening, thrusting towards the man and catching him in the chest with the spear's point, driving it into the man before pulling it out with a satisfied smirk at having bested a trained soldier.

It soon turned to fear as the man focused his anger at her from his wounds, his first strike wild and fast as it bashed the spear out of the way and clove into her shoulder. The second swing she didn't even have time to prepare for, the steel blade cleaving right through the cobbled-together armor and sinking deep into her side. Her eyes went wide with surprise as she gasped for air, her body rapidly going numb. When the man removed his sword, she all but almost collapsed, barely standing.

The unarmed militia recruit cried out seeing her wounded so heavily in fear. "Marian! No, Marian, hold on, I'll be there soon! Jus-Just hold on!" The captain grimaced sourly at seeing one of his soldiers wounded so badly so quickly.
