Door thickness

Its easily seen that firemen rip through stone doors like through paper. How about other doors ? Will they destroy steel doors as easily ?

Good question.

It'd also make sense that the wooden doors would be weaker then the stone doors, especially when up against a fire-spewing creature, if the above were true.

[It'd also make a "Brace Door" metalsmithing job sensible; now, you can brace weaker doors with stronger materials.]

Maybe you should be able to engrave pictures of fire extinguishers on doors to scare them off  >.>

Some kind of special doors would be cool, though. It would be nice to have some impressive, thick, impregnable gates up at the entrance to your fortress.

Perhaps make a door with a lock using a mechanism?

yeah.. but if you sandwich doors with traps..

... why would steel doors be stronger than rock doors in the face of fire? can't say i remember melting points of either..

mind you.. do they smack the door down? (as in knocking hinges off)... smash it to pieces.. or burn a hole through it?

it still wont make the door any stronger.
Which __IS__ an issue, since you cant always have hundreds of traps around every door, every well, and the demons could sneeze on your traps as well.

The melting point of most igneous rocks (the more common on the map), including intrusive and extrusive depositions is around 1200 degrees celcius.  That includes olivine, potasium feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, micas, pyroxene, and others.  Basalt, and other extrusive depositions melt around 1200 as well.  The melting point of steel is around 1370 degrees celcius, while Iron melts at 1510 degrees celcius (out of the ground I mean, for smelting purposes).

Steel loses most of its strength a bit before it melts, though, doesn't it?

Yes, which must mean that the magma isn't precisely at its melting point, but hotter.

(in between melting and vaporizing). Something I remembered from High School!
