Just curious, what would it take to get people to play sports games.

I don't play the genre myself, but if there was customization of movement like what 98 Koshien did (in that case, how you pitched the ball), then I might buy a game.

A fictional setting and a sport that doesn't exist/wouldn't be possible in real life, like the Harry Potter Quidditch videogame. Real-life sports bore me to tears. I'm not invested in any real-life teams, players, coaches etc. but I can get behind Harry Potter showing up Draco Malfoy by whupping Slytherin's ass at Quidditch.

Violence, really. Lasers, melee weapons, killer robots. What have you. It's the only reason I play Blood Bowl. The deeper appreciate of strategy and tactics in sports doesn't really do it for me, to the extent I'd play games about them.

Sports games is fun.  NBA 2k is a lot of fun and the baseball game was reasonably fun, though not as fun as NBA.

Haven't played Madden, the EA sports labels aren't very interested in PC release it seems.

I play sports games from time to time. They're fun and are best played with friends/family on the couch. The best ones nicely blend authenticity with streamlined controls. I generally enjoy exhibition, season, and general manager modes.

I don't pick up new titles every year, but I've got entries from the following series: Madden, NFL 2k (I really miss this series), NCAA Football, FIFA, EA's NHL series, NBA 2K, and some baseball games from various series as well as various misc. sports games like FIFA/NBA Street, Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside, FOX Sports College Hoops 99, and Tiger Woods 11 (one of the best games on the Wii IMO).

Sports games are fun. But like 2D fighters and whatnot I tend to categorize them in the 2+ player bin. Which wouldn't a problem except for the fact that I mostly play by myself.

Absolute and complete customization of players, coaches, teams, uniforms, equipment, venues, plays, etc combined with Skyrim levels of modding. Fictional setting would be a huge plus (DF-style world generation would be even better).

I already love sports games, at least the ones in which I can create my player and train him until he's a superstar. Games like MLB2k, NBA2k,....
I also love football manager and more rarely playing a game or 2 of FIFA with friends.
