Try to visualize the direction you should be going and head that way. If that completely fails, spin around in a circle and point one way or the other and head in that direction or another until you find something different.

NOT EVEN I WOULD DO SUCH A STUPID ACTION LIKE THAT.

Burrow into one of the rotten patches. You're a fox, foxes are good at digging, and absolutely nothing can go wrong with this plan.

+1, We might find gems in the caverns!

+1, We can pop out to waylay other travelers.  Travelers that might have food and water!

It's 3:4 in favor of digging. I'll give it a bit more time in case anyone wants to throw their two cents in.

And how do you know there are other travelers?

It takes magic to get here.

I don't think we can take on a wizard yet.

(Strictly speaking, this is both one of the more commonly used forms of magical travel, and almost exclusively the purview of relatively weak and inexperienced practitioners; anyone with the power or knowledge to use something else will generally do so. That said, the likelihood of encountering someone else is still highly unlikely given the nature of the Greenway -- if you deliberately try, it'd be something like a 2-3% chance if you didn't wait for (in subjective time) days.)

Well, maybe something edible grows in the greenway's walls.  Worth a shot, right?

I think it would be smarter to keep moving. We might find other travelers.

(Calling it here.)

Carefully, carefully, you think, prodding at the rot with a forepaw. It has some give, but is not overly wet. Faint memories of old dens flit through your mind. Good ground for digging, here. With quick scratches you gouge chunks from the lower curve of this tunnel, sending a spray of orange-green mush up behind you. Several minutes pass. Almost completely beneath the tunnel now, you pause for a moment, sneezing violently to clear a spot of the disgusting goop from your snout. Shaking it off, you continue.

(1d100 → [82] Digging success.
(1d100 → [57] ??
(1d100 → [14] Encounter traveler?)

It takes some time, though you've no real way of judging how much, but you eventually feel the rot give way, crumbling down into an open space. You tumble along with it, rolling to your feet quickly. A glance up shows the winding burrow you've dug twisting up and away from the ceiling of the tunnel you're in now. It looks much the same as the last one, except that you're standing in something of a three-way intersection: one branch leads off to your left, a second down and right, and a third up and to your right rear. Well, there's a fourth branch now, at any rate.

(In order, ~9 o' clock and level, ~2 o' clock and a 30 degree slope downward, ~5 o' clock and a 55 degree slope upward. Your own tunnel is directly overhead.)

[] Take the left-hand path. That's how you get out of mazes, right?
[] Take the right-down path. You always wanted to be a dwarf.
[] Take the right-up path. Maybe there's a surface? "Ahaha."
[] Try to figure out how to leave this place; you got in, so you gotta be able to get out, right?
[] Write-in.

(That's unlikely to do much without a destination, goal, or objective in mind. If it's about getting out of the Desolation you already have.)

Iiiis "Beneficial Exit" an option?
(In a mundane maze or structure and having developed the proper skills, certainly. In the same, but untrained, depending on how well you roll. In a magical construct which is a psuedo-physical symbolic representation of a magical concept, less so. You have absolutely no clue how to go about finding a subjectively good exit point, nor what you might need to do in order to do so -- the magical tools to build the tools, so to speak. There's a very small chance you'll figure something out by fumbling around blindly, which is how most untrained magic use goes without instruction or innate talent.

For example, you'd be much more likely to succeed in developing a way to accurately guide yourself to a desired exit point from the Greenway if you did so with the aid of records, notes, or another practitioner who understands it better than you do. Likewise, you'd have a much better chance of developing greater control over and understanding of something which is closely tied to your nature, like foxfire or illusions, than of something unrelated. Of course, as your total knowledge and skill of magic grows, it becomes easier to develop and incorporate new aspects of it into your repertoire, much like any other skillset.

Of course, as above, there is a slight chance that you'll strike upon it through sheer luck.)
