Sociopathic dwarves?
« on: December 19, 2014, 08:20:04 am »

Greetings fellow dwarf noble incinerators. Recently, i have been going through the thoughts and feelings of my dwarves (somewhat disturbing when you think of it). One of the main recurring patterns was UristMcWhatever felt nothing when seeing a [animal] die.
Are my dwarves becoming sociopaths?

Or you could just let the children roam free and natural selection will take care of them.

Dwarves aren't bothered by death unless it's of something sentient (no clue about pets).  So I guess all dwarves are sociopathic in that way (as well as many others).

I wouldn't say so. The slaughter of animals is just routine to them; if you've come from a family who slaughter their own meat instead of buying it from a butcher the death of animals just means nothing but food. Until they're mindlessly killing each other with no concern they're not sociopaths. I wonder if this has something to do with the 'does not care about anything anymore' trait from the older versions, where Dwarves who regularly witnessed or suffered tragedy became shellshocked to most emotion.

I assume it's because dwarf civs have KILL_ANIMAL:ACCEPTABLE, meaning they have no problem with killing animals under any circumstances. Now that I think about it, I'm curious what emotions would trigger if they had, say, KILL_ANIMAL:UNTHINKABLE instead.

Funny how much the death of even something like a chicken can affect people who didn't grow up with it. I was at a friend's farm last summer when they slaughtered some roosters, another friend (who is kind of a sensitive woman) who had never seen an animal slaughtered wanted to see it. We hung the roosters up by their feet and cut the necks with one clean cut, then skinned them (because that's way easier than plucking.) So, yeah. She's a vegetarian now.

Thanks a lot everyone! I wasn't calling anyone a sociopath, just in case anyone felt offended or something.

Yep, I've unintentionally made a few males vegetarian by slaughtering their feathery dinner in their proximity. I even had a boyfriend who dropped me because I said that I didn't think I could eat a meat from an animal I didn't feel I could slaughter myself. He found that... offputting, for some reason. {shrug} I find it offputting that some people can eat meat they don't feel it is acceptable to kill. Some people are like that I guess: A different moral compass to my own. The world is a big wide place. It's a pity I can't find a boyfriend willing to share my morals....

Plucking really isn't that bad, and the skin of the bird is pleasant when roasted. You just douse the bird in hot water first, then the feathers come out remarkably easily. They make great mulch for the garden if you don't want to use them as feather stuffing for cushions. In ancient and medieval times they were worth a lot of time and effort, and thus money, so it seems to me that they should be worth more in Dwarf Fortress too. Fletching, for a start... Or for making beds more comfy, like a shell or bone decoration on furniture.

This is a chicken feather pillow. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of softness and menaces with spikes of comfort.

Legendary mittens that menace with spikes of obsidian are very common in one of my old fortresses. We had 3.

What will the Dwarves spikify next, beds?

I hardly see beds without spikes, but I still don't get what is up with those menacing spikes in giant menacing spikes...
