Babies provide an extra attack sponge. 6/10 pretty useful but too many emotional ties.

I just set the [ORIENTATION] tag so that only 1% of my dwarves even think of romance, let alone marriage. Much easier that way.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Eh, I couldn't remember if babies were carried for a year or two.  Either way, I just draft whoever is useless into the military.  If someone pops out a crotch goblin, i just assign them to a training-only squad deep in the fortress for a while.  Babies don't happen frequently enough for your military to be significantly impacted anyway.  If a couple of birth's cuts your military in half, just wait a month until the next migrant wave to quadruple your military- you are obviously early enough to not really need a military.

Setting the child cap to zero was one of the best DF decisions I ever made. No more worrying about female soldiers getting preggers, no more useless children draining FPS and resources, way lower tantrum risk without all the little bastards making a hundred friends... just all upside,  really.

It might be worth noting that in the versions since the emotion rewrite, all dwarven socialising has been pruned nearly out of existence - they generate very few friendships, next to no loving relationships and absolutely no marriages. Children in the fort come from already-married migrant couples. Thus, fiddling with romance settlings is exceedingly unlikely to have any effect. Of course, if you received many migrant families, you can still get numerous babies unless you set a very low child cap.
You could also physically separate married couples, dwarven (sentient?) reproduction always required an unbroken path.

So you're saying I'm not the only person whose dwarves are apparently asocial permavirgins?  Interesting.  This calls for science.

Popcap and childcap greatly increase humanity in dwarf fortress.

Not trolling. Not complaining about how Deboche runs his fort, he can do what ever he wants.

I think it belongs here cause it is about game play.

Putting the child holding ladies in a training group for the duration seems like a wonderfully useful idea and it holds so many fun mental images.

We just don't get what you were trying to accomplish with your post is all.

What kind of discussion did you feel should come out of this that merits its own thread?

Now it requires them to be within one square of each other. My headcanon is that conception is accomplished by fistbumps as they walk by each other in the hallway.

Now we know why the females lack beards:  the males grope the female chins with their beard and pass on their genes that way

Could also be useful in case of a military wipe. If you always have some skilled soldiers on maternity leave, you always have some skilled teachers in case something goes horribly wrong.

Or you could leave the women as permanent trainers, and let them wander amongst the general population to be activated in case of nearby emergency.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
