Mutilating innocent dwarves is a big no for dwarves unless they are very stressed. In that case, dwarves can be gelded in fights. Normally, attacking dwarves is not allowed unless they have been convicted of a crime. I would like to see a more dynamic justice system where punishments could be more or less harsh, with gelding being potentially one of them, but for now the only way to geld a dwarf is for somebody to do it in a fight.

Why would gelding be a punishment for a dwarf? It seems like the only thing it causes is them to not have children, which most dwarves don't even care about...

It would be very painful (the main reason) and stop the dwarf from enjoying sex, at least for a while (the tissues for the orgasm reflex are still there).

If gelding does not cause pain now, it should. Of course the pain will go if the wound heals.

I had a bunch of civilians drop their babies to punch a donkey skin and then when I told another group to flee with a burrow one threw her child onto the ground to escape with the other :-\

How are babies handled by the code, exactly?  They aren't carried by hand, I know that much.  They seem to float in a prone position in the same tile as the mother.

They're treated the same way as riders on mounts I believe.  Playing around in DFHack seems to indicate as much anyway, but it's been a while since I last fooled with that.

How that factors into combat I'm not sure.  My guess is that there's no chance to randomly hit a rider if you're aiming at the mount and the attacker just has to decide which to attack.  I know for certain that I've seen babies targeted directly in melee combat before, but it was by a second or third antagonist ganging up on the mom if I recall.  The first was too busy fighting her.

Dwarves have sex by touching, and the new spores are transferred from the otherwise undefined lower body. So I mean, do they actually enjoy it?

Maybe it works like it does with chickens?

Anyway, the only thing gelding would be an appropriate punishment for would be awful and thankfully does not exist in vanilla.

Is gelding the thing I think it is or the thing you think it is? Because I think they're different things.

Gelding is castration to me, removing the testicles completely but presumably leaving the penis. A rather painful and nasty procedure for a dwarf to undergo.

Chickens must enjoy sex, though bird sex is usually very brief, or they would not do it and there would be no more chickens. The same can be said for dwarves.

I would ask if animals it's done to have pain thoughts, but animals don't display thoughts... if anyone modded gelding to work on civilian dwarves they could check that (obviously an injury that caused gelding would also cause pain, but would gelding itself be painful?), but I doubt it actually causes unhappy thoughts...

It definitely causes lack of fertility, but whether it is painful castration or some kind of painless beard function that causes lack of baby-making power would be up to fan theory (yes I know that's not what theory means, but it's convenient)

The way it's done wouldn't necessarily be horrifically painful though. Even without specialised anaesthetic the process is simple enough that the doctors should be able to do it with some pain, but not terribly so. Not the kind of days-long agony you seem to think it would cause.

is there even anesthetic in DF at all? I've watched videos of this being done on animals and it certainly doesn't look painless. But I can't really confirm that dwarves have the equipment that real life males and females generally have.

I didn't mean to imply painless. But it would be a temporary pain rather than the kind that lingers for days. That second part at least is from personal experience.

were you castrated, because if it is not too personal, I would love to know the details.

Haha no, it's not that big a deal really. I only lost one. It just kind of spontaneously up and died (something about blood flow being cut off because of positioning) so obviously had to be taken out to prevent infection.

I have like a million questions to ask because I am curious but it probably isn't an appropriate subject, especially for this thread.

The skill of the gelder would of course make it less painful. Castration was done on slaves in the past and was deliberately made painful, so if it was done as a punishment I expect it would be similar.

Dwarves seem to have the same apparatus as most other mammals. Their mating is quick, like that of birds - the male dwarf penetrates the female, ejaculates instantly and withdraws, all in a few seconds.
