It would be nicer if kobolds were sneakier.  Stealing toy hammers, mugs, crafts, any other other worthless crap most dwarf fortresses put out and managing to escape without the military noticing would be quite an achievement.

Of course, if they start stealing steel weapons & armor players would start getting annoyed.

EDIT: I can't believe I misspelled stealing.  Damn it.

i would in fact like to see them steal more practical or valuabe stuff in addition to the usual.

and if they used what they took in capacity all the better.

It would certainly be more fun rather than "Kobold steals iron armor from goblin I killed three years ago", that's for sure.

Kobold sieges could be interesting too if you haven't defended your creations...

Just think, kobolds in adamantine armor with steel weapons, have fun guys!

Give them backpacks, they grab as much as they can, then run. Leather armour too.

I think they need to be stronger. I always give them iron, mail shirts, leather, scimitars, whips, spears, helms, and shields. Also make them not flee on sight, a bit bigger, and naturally professional dodgers. This makes them weaker than goblins, but stronger than before.

You've modded them to the point where they aren't Kobolds any more.

Kobolds are lizard-dog cave-dwellers.  I like to think of them as partially nomadic; tents, temporary burrows in the dirt, herding rats and whatnot.  They're a race of dirty, filthy thieves, and their extinction during worldgen is simply the game trying to stamp out the disgusting little buggers.

I love them, they're possibly one of my favorite races in DF.

Unfortunately, even if they managed to steal armor, they couldn't use it - it's too big on them.

I think it would be cool if kobolds had better AI and could pull off clever tricks to get past your dwarves.  For example, instead of coming in one at a time, send two of them - one to distract the guards, and one to sneak past the guards while they're wasting time chasing the decoy.  Or at least give them the ability to see and avoid the guard's vision fields, like players can do in adventure mode.  But that probably won't happen for a while.

They should also be able to use weapons other than daggers when sneaking in.  Blowguns would be a good choice.

Kobolds are vermin, just like goblins, and should be treated as such.

I have lost many of my dwarves to their large copper daggers. I have not forgotten.

They are thieves and murderers and they will not have any mercy from me. Unless they actually stop killing my civilians or stealing from my forts.

I LOVE kobolds! They're cute and small enough not to be a serious threat, yet nasty enough that they deserve what's coming for them. I definitely wouldn't want them to be stronger, but I would be ok with them being sneakier: pelting enemies with rocks and arrows from high ground, digging trap holes and defending their burrows with murder holes.

My idea of what kobolds look like goes completely into headcanon territory, but here it is: https://static1.e621.net/data/fb/17/fb17e741c97034f9443cec5512e8edec.png

Did you try any of the kobold mods? There is Kobold Camp and the Masterwork DF Kobold mode. Both different from each other, maybe worth a look. :)

Reading the raw files kobolds are unlikely to be lizard-like imo. They are homeothermic and have ears and a mouth, lips and nose (not a snout). Their defining traits are the complete lack of linguistic abilities or musicality very low empathy, bad analytical ability, focus, creativity and intuition but above average agility. They are untrusting and flee quickly in the face of danger.

I see them as a race of primitive, mischievous troublemakers and thieves. Best to greet them with a bolt.

So, they're evolutionarily primitive? Even giving them linguistic capabilities doesn't help with their skittishness. Then again, nearly all of the kobolds that I've met belonged to some criminal or bandit faction and automatically hostile to me.

They do have some reptillian traits though like internal genitalia and egg laying.

Yeah, according to Toady and Threetoe they're little yellow humanoids with glowing yellow eyes that sneak around a lot, pull random levers and make lots of random noises and gesture. Their whole civ's around stealing and using remains noone else will use.

They're not dogs, lizard or dog-lizards in DF. Of course, this being DF you can mod them to be that.

EDIT: And oh yeah, they lay eggs.

You're mixing up gremlins with kobolds. Kobolds have brownish skin, not yellow and they don't care about pulling levers. Although I could see Kobolds pulling levers for stragetic reasons so as to create a distraction while they sneak about.

The egg-laying is not necessarily pointing towards them being lizards. Platypus also lay eggs and they are mammals as was already said. Pretty crazy mammals, laying eggs, using electrolocation, being poisonous and whatnot. It's like evolution had a bad hang-over and felt like making a practical joke. xD

I think the key trait is kobolds being homeothermic. I don't think there are any homeothermic reptilia. Only mammals and birds have warm blood and kobolds have no beaks, tails or feathers, so...
