Retake my fortress in a re animating biome.
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:20:32 pm »

I embarked in a 4 biome site, untamed wilds, 2 joyous wilds and a terrifying.  The first time I was wiped out by a undead giant mantis, I think she also got help from the cat.

The second time I brought the best hammer dwarf I could with a full set of iron armour, he was quickly killed by a severed head.  And then some undead giant sparrows descended and killed everything else.

So since I have two wagons of stuff, 4 picks 2 axes, food and booze,  and about 50 bit coal, what do I need to retake the site?

Related question.  I embarked with four different wild sites so I could get the most interesting animals, the terrifying biome seams to be overwhelming the other three so far, but I haven't made it to summer yet.  Will I get interesting living animals?

More men, 1 dwarf vs x undead.....won't end well. Not to mention you MAY be facing x undead +1 undead iron armored zombie.

So since I don't need to take an anvil.  Should I bring a minor or two and kit everyone else as mace dorfs with iron armour?

Axe dorfs?
I think I will still bring some food it's cheep and I don't want to have to go looking for it.

Well if you can wall off in time you can try to do that.

I ve got 7 dudes?  I have a partially dug mine, 2 z levels,  some chopped wood but that is now scattered all over the map so it might be faster to chop new.

Is there any combination of builders and fighters that could survive the first year?

You can forget the logs for now. You can bring some tools. Build a hatch door to control the undead and lock them. Remember to burrow your dorfs first once you bring necessary goods inside(forbid others). You only need plump helmet seeds for now.

You can tunnel under your goods which are left outside and bring them in carefully, forbid those too far away. If anything bad crawls near, burrow your dorfs and lock the door.

When you have your defence set up, you can extend your territory, bit by bit.

------------------------------------------------------

What is important:

Leave two doors, at least.

Once you open your gate, bad things will probably begin to path into your fort. So you can build a fake entrance to fool them, build a long corridor maze to delay them or contain them when necessary.

I'm in the same boat. I tried creating an adventurer and going there with a couple of companions, but although there were a bunch of corpses, I only found one undead dog.
thing I found with attempting to retake it, was that my dwarfs didn't have enough time to equip before they were "ambushed" by undead.

Marksdwarves are mandatory; melee Dwarves without armour and only with proficient skill will be overrun by the undead in short order. Marksdwarves can hold the undead at bay for as long as they have bolts and can buy you enough time to move yourself underground and set up a drawbridge.

You can take armour on embark.  You still recommend marks dwarves?  With armour?

Personally I'd say no; if the corpse is close enough that it's in melee range with your marksdwarves then your marksdwarves won't be using their crossbows for anything other than a bludgeon and it'll likely already be too late. Though if you have points to spare I don't see why not.

It's not points to spare.  I am considering a custom embark that can fight off some rather large and savagely aggressive undead, long enough to secure a base.  I have 7 dorfs, irons weapons and armour to choose from skills can go as high as proficient or what ever five points is, an no need to bring anything else.

These aren't settlers this is a special forces team.

Helm and breastplate with any wooden shield seems good; gauntlets, greaves and mail shirts are secondary. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to also bring axes or hammers as sidearms for your Dwarves as well. Keep in mind that if the undead are allowed to attack your Dwarves directly then an unhappy thought is generated; it can make them really miserable until they become enameled to tragedy, so even if no mortal injuries are sustained by your Dwarves it's a risky affair. Try to avoid melee combat as much as possible. Some points invested discipline skill wouldn't be a bad idea either.

No matter your skill / equipment distribution, the right type of undead will bring your reembark dwarves down, all of them, even if you spent everything on military skills and equipment. The only solution to the undead plague is brains not muscle, your militia gives you the time to dig in and prepare. (Afaik there are no wooden shields on embark, at least not under shields.)

For sheer survival, you don't need anything but a pick and an axe (and an anvil) you can find plants (seeds), trees, hopefully water in the cavern and bring as little as possible as this means less hauling and speeds up digging in. Also, blocks/logs for a screeening wall used to be really helpful - and should still prevent aggression from undead that are unable to see you because of the wall. Skills that speed up digging (miner) and/or wall building (mason/carpenter) help.

Also note that slicing weapons can be bad; severed pieces of corpses can and will reanimate themselves if they fall within the reanimating biome, giving you exponential zombies. My advice would be to run, essentially... try to get a safe place established with a fast miner or builder and then attempt an attack after you get some breathing room.
