Scourges and whips?
« on: December 14, 2014, 07:00:08 pm »

I want to equip a squad with whips and flails, and the other alien weapons.   What's best? What material?

I've read the wiki and Am now confused.  For instance, I read somewhere that dorfs can't use pikes, but then saw a chart that seamed to say 2/50 dorfs could.  Any advice would be great.

Dwarves cant use pikes.  Theres a bug where the game only considers average size for being able to use weapons, not individual size.  Dwarven average size is 60000, while the minimal required size is above that.

As for whips, I think they use blunt damage, so silver or steel is good.

Sounds like whips are pretty bad ass.

What's best for the undead?  I've been reading you want blunt weapons, but not hammers cause they are too slow.

Maces work best against undead, I find. If you kill the necromancer, I believe cutting weapons are then effective in those situations. I think whips would work well too, but I could be mistaken.

Whips are pretty OP.
Whenever I manage to get a master lasher I find they chip bone with pretty much every shot.

Well I've never seen a real life whip made of metal, so maybe they would be pretty powerful...

Morning stars are piercing maces. Very good weapons. Scourges are basically cutting whips. Like a high velocity spear. Flails are mauls basically, that use mace skill.

I did say any intel.  :p

Should I use, those weapons?  What material should they be?
How do they stack against steel short swords axes and spears?
When do I use lighter blunt weapons like those above instead of hammers?
I want blunt weapons against undead correct?  Which of those are good against undead, of those good against undead which are good against goblins and FB's.

Thanks for all your help.

The only weapon that's alower than another weapon is whips which have an attack speed of 4:4 rather than 3:3 because they're still incredibly powerful. Hammers are really just better than maces except that the mace skill also includes a few other weapons, some of which are good. However exotic weapons aren't good for a military as a finely crafted steel weapon will be better than a masterwork iron one and you're only going to be getting base quality weapons if you're not making them yourself.

I used a whip in DF 0.40.19 in adventure mode recently. It was very disappointing, compared to the hype I'd heard.

I also find it a bit odd that a carving knife and a battle axe both have the same prepare/recover times. Does anybody know what the 'misc object' times are? Is it the same for attacking with an Enormous Steel Corkscrew as it is for attacking with a jug? :P

True, exotic weapons aren't as good as masterwork steel, but if you're not at the masterwork steel level (weaponcrafter isn't that good or you don't have access to steel) they're pretty solid.

Maces are better for undead killing.
What makes maces better for killing undead though? Is there some magical thing about undead that makes them weak to maces? I really can't imagine anything that could be done in game that would make maces better against undead than hammers aside from Toady putting something into the code to specifically make them weaker. I'm completely open to the idea if it's true, I just don't see how it could be. Also as a reply to the person who posted right before the person who posted right before this (people are just posting constantly wow), whips are mainly good at piercing armor of a better material and better quality than them somehow. This is mostly useless for adventurer mode because unless you're going to try and fight the military of a fortress you made, armor is only very rarely worn and when it is it's just a breastplate and a helmet. Also yeah, misc objext user is the same skill for all nonweapons.

Because of higher contact area, a mace is more likely to pulp instead of break bones. Pulping is what puts zombies down fast. Hammers will kill them, just roughly two thirds as fast.
