I equipped a dorf with a steel battle axe and sent him to kill some echidnas.
But he didn't gain any exp in axedwarf skill. I checked both in game and in therapist, no, he's not even dabbling axedwarf.

By the way, the echidnas will roll into a ball to defend themselves, so you can't decapitate them nor tear their limbs. The only available target is their upper body.

I remember that dwarves shouldn't gain XP when hitting an unconscious target.

Maybe rolling into a ball cancels out xp gain ?
