Depending on how restrictively you define 'indie', mine are:

  • Divinity: Original Sin - oldish school isometric view RPG with turn based combat.  Nicely polished, decent combat and character building, and a good amount of content.
  • Wasteland 2 - similar vein to Divinity: Original Sin, though admittedly not quite as good, polished or fleshed out.  Still pretty good though, and a style of RPG I love but which has been somewhat thin on the ground in recent years.
  • Age of Wonders 3 - some issues with homogenization of the races and weak AI, but that's been improving with patches, and otherwise a good continuation of my favourite turn based strategy series.

I haven't really played much in the way of lower budget indie games this year (besides stuff like DF or Cataclysm), though Transistor and a handful of others are in my queue of games to pick up at some point.

basing my def of indie off steam says it's indie right now, I'd count in Verdun and This war of mine
The first might not be the best, but it's a neat ww1 shooter.
The second, oh gods, it's something else totally. Play as survivors in a (I assume) eastern European city under military siege

EDIT: Verdun came out end of last year, so technically doesn't count even if still in early access.

- Crypt of the Necrodancer - I hear that this is amazing, but I've never played it. A rhythm roguelike? I almost want it just for the concept.

Has anyone played this? I remember being really jazzed when I first saw it too. Steam reviews are 99% positive, so yeah...damn. If it goes on sale below $10 I might have to grab it.

Shovel knight, yes. It's only flaw is that it is too short.

I don't keep track of when things were released, but here are a few of my favourites I played in 2014:

Tower of Guns
Hexcells (all of them)
Long Live the Queen
Spelunky
Super House of Dead Ninjas
Thomas was Alone
Walking Dead (Season 1 & 2)(Although I guess that probably doesn't count as indie)

only actual 2014 indie I've messed with is Heroine's Quest, which is very good

best indie I played in 2014 was Mark of the Ninja, sadly that is 2 years old :D

You could look at it another way, too: Anything early access hasn't officially been released yet...

Crypt of the Necrodancer was fun but only for a few hours. Once the novelty wears off it's just a simple roguelike with an extra semi-annoying gimmick and no meaningful class selection (everyone has the same random skills except all the non-default characters are either cheating or hardmode). I'd definitely say it's not worth the price unless you're a fiend for rhythm games and roguelikes and completely infatuated with the awesome soundtrack.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

My favorites from this year are:

Cosmic DJ (sweet on so many levels)
Words For Evil (excellent word game)
One Finger Death Punch (my favorite action game of all time)
Lyne (clever puzzler)
Circuits (music-based in a unique way)
Kami (chill but challenging paper-folding puzzler)
Sokobond (elemental puzzler with simple but challenging gameplay)
A Bird Story (made by creator of to the moon; more of an interactive story than a game, but it will make you cry)

I did a video on Cosmic DJ (link to my youtube channel in my sig if you want to check it out).

Here comes a mini review.
Spoiler: Words here (click to show/hide)

It's hard to believe that the year is almost over... I can't even remember what games I've played throughout the year off the top of my head, at least not ones that have been released this year. I may just have to go with The Red Solstice just because it's the only one I remember playing that was released in 2014. I would add Xenonauts to the list had I actually gotten around to playing it.

Technically, Risk of Rain came out late 2013, but I've played a fair bit of it in 2014 with friends and it was a lot of fun. It's a 2d platformer-shooter roguelike, where you select a class and pick up items over the course of the game to empower yourself.

Edit: Multiplayer is possible for up to like 10(?) players (the steam page claims only 4 players, but I've played with 5), but it's also fun going through it as one person. The only change that multiple people has is that you're now playing the normal singleplayer game with multiple people in it (and I think the enemies get a bit tougher?)

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, it's just like the original but much better, I've already got 100 hours and am nowhere near done with it.

I liked Shadowrun Dragonfall Directors Cut, as well as Wasteland 2.

Styx: Master of Shadows is up there too
