You've probably heard that about the french crossbow vs the english bows during the hundred year war, which is true because th french didn't use very heavy crossbow. Heavy crossbow, on the other hand, had considerably more power.
That might be where I heard that.
What do you mean by a 'heavy crossbow', though?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Something like that, where the wielder uses a mechanism (such as a crank) to store more power than they could with just their arm and the string.

Well very big crossbows that you use some sort of crank to load. They can get pretty big, even for man portable ones.

Crossbows can go up to this but that's not exactly portable.

To get back to the OP, "Samurai" are proficient at naginata and bows first and foremost. Katanas are weapons of last resort and dueling weapons. If you catch a samurai in a battlefield with only his katana then he's fuck because their enemy has a spear to shank him from 7 feet away.

"Knights" are mostly heavy cavalry, which Japan lacks. Huge armored horses, spear/lances and swords.

I'm gonna have to go with the Samurai because they have huge ass longbows. The can either shoot down the knight himself or the horse. In a melee on foot it heavily favors the knight because of the shield. The only weapon a samurai can use to hurt a knight is the kanabo and a hooked variation of the yari/spear.

Knights are heavily-armored guys that trained since they were kids. They had good metallurgy and made good weapons. I don't know much about Samurais, but i know that Japan's metallurgy wasn't the best. They had the "Magical" katana, which wasn't their main weapon and for some anime reason everybody praises it. In my opinion, Knights would kick the weaboo kawaii desu baka out of the Samurai.

I should point out that English longbows are more powerful than yumi on average, and that arrows of any sort are not particularly effective against plate armor which tends to deflect the points. The reason we stopped using shields is because the armor itself was like walking around covered by them. This included the longbow, which was usually aimed at the horse or fired in such mass volleys that a lucky hit on an armor gap was hoped to happen.

Yari (spears) were the common weapon of both samurai and soldiers when fighting with melee weapons as far as I am aware; I don't know the exact amount of usage naginata served in ratio comparison.

A kanabo made of full metal of the size posted would be entirely impractical, slow, and inaccurate. Most kanabo used for combat were the size of a one handed mace or warhammer and served the same function.

Samurai were, in effect, landed nobles; At least by the time of what we consider a "samurai" to be. Ashigaru were the common soldiers that samurai led into battle.

Instead of a full metal knight, would a samurai beat a Chinese dynasty warrior?

Japanese musket were very good, though, and used by Samurai, too.

But as I said, you're comparing apples to orange. Samurai were the equivalent of men-at-arms, not of knighs.

Fully upgraded Samurai loses to a fully upgraded Paladin. Sheesh, guys, play some AoE2 before you ask stupid questions.

The Knight wins the Presidency by a landslide, though with only a 58.3% turnout due to voter apathy or outright contempt for both candidates.

While Japanese muskets were spectacularly good, I am unaware of Samurai using them personally.  When/where did that happen?

Well even the wiki says it, but Mushashi mention them in his book.
