4maskwolf
Oh, you're welcome... I think.

Thanks for the answer, and by the criteria you show then... No war is a just war? I mean, the only war that really had the potential for it was WWII, but now with the noncombatant stuff... Yeah, we are all screwed.
I would like to ask, then, do Catholics refuse to fight in the circumstance of a war not worthy of their strength? Would a Catholic refuse to fight if the war did not achieved his moral standards?

I'm not 4maskwolf, but a war of defence in a good position would probably be a Just War. The only problem would be the relatively high chance of having slim odds of victory.

Nah, actually defending in a war with the current tech going on is suicide. One example might be the war on terror, it causes way more harm than simply doing nothing, as that creates a image for the terrorists, along with a cause. Terrorists are just random dudes following the wave.

No
Not all of them
Plenty of terrorists are people looking for power or trying to spread their religion or some other
What we do in the war on terror probably does as much harm as it does if we did nothing.
If anything at least the war on terror gives something that keeps terrorists from getting too powerful.

... the war on terror isn't a war by pretty much any definition of war you want to use. It's a PR buzzword that's entirely unrepresentative of the actions involved with the effort, so... terrible, terrible example. Specific acts or situations related to it have erupted into war, but the general movement is... no. Low intensity conflicts in general, which are usually your primary hotbed for terrorist action, do have incredible amounts of difficulty meeting any particular just war definition, for what that's worth.

Though I did just realize it's kinda' amusing that jihad would actually be a pretty darn accurate term to use for the so-called war on terror. Especially the more ideological aspects of it really kinda' fits the whole thing to a T...

The whole terrorism stuff is about not having power. If you didn't had a country, how would you wage war?
You start operations, and you credit them to your entity.
But still, you don't have a country, how big of a operation you can set up?
Small, they never needed to be big. Terrorism is about inflicting terror upon people. Terrorists don't get more power, they waste more finite resources. They are a human throwing a tantrum, they will slowly dig their own graves. If you start a Goddamned international campaign against them you are just giving them what they want, attention. Ask about it to Kim Jong-un, his tatics are the very essence of terrorism. If you make so much effort to stop them, people will think they are powerful even though they aren't, and that's exactly their objective.

(Damn, what a long post!)

Edit:
Yeah, sorry for using such example, but it's the only defense-only one visible right now.

It's... getting beyond the purview of the thread, but... also no. There's quite a few visible conflicts in the world right now that are actually, y'know, conflicts.

Beyond that, the general actions of war on terror wouldn't even remotely qualify as defensive only, unfortunately. Very few of the actual conflicts that has arisen due to it would even half-way qualify as just, really...

I haven't.

It depends on the Catholic, David, but in theory yes.

Yeah, let's stay well away from the whole War on Terror thing, that's bound to cause a flame war sooner or later if we go down that rabbithole.

It is basicaly believing there is an inactive god out there that wants you to be a good person be happy and you only pray to them when you want things usually for yourself.

there are a good number of people who are MTD (shorter, much shorter) but think they are Christian because they don't know the difference

E: came out a bit more angry than meant to

I'd prefer we avoid the judgement statements, Cryxis.
