you were being a bit too opinionated and apeared to be trying to tear down the guy's belief system. you aint suposed to debate people here, just satisfy your curiosity

among the apes that were their close kin? seems rather easy to reconcile that part of genesis with a belief in evolution

and evolution is not all about forward steps, id argue evolution doesn have a sense of forward even. didnt many birds lose the ability to fly? though the numbers in the bible are quite astronomic its not rare that species evolve to have shorter lifespans. evolution is not about getting bigger, faster, stronger and "better", its about fiting in
It's not about fitting in, though it does cause them to fit in. It's about survival- and after Adam and Eve, we went on a huge downward spiral. We weren't the stewards of animals, we were animals. We were hunted and eaten, we were not even at the top of the food chain, never mind ruling all animals.

Arguing points is what satisfies my curiosity- it leads to a much better insight into what others believe, as it causes them to be a bit more thoughtful in what they write. If someone doesn't want me to ask my questions to them in such a way, they only have to ask.

It's my understanding they're just Calvinists, though I may be wrong.

It's a denomination, like Presbyterian or Baptist. It is Calvinist, but that's not all that it is.

survival is on a day to day basis, the features that make a species survive certain conditions might well be the ones that will doom it when conditions inevitably change. theres no forward, there's just just a building up of genetic noise and incidental complexity. an elephant might evolve into a rat and a human into an amoeba Under the right circunstances

its arguing that sent the other threads crashing and burning. this is the best thing we can have, and if we keep fucking up were gonna ruin our chances of ever having religion threads. these things escalate pretty fast, so argue corvertly and carefuly, because, like me, what goes on your mind would be pretty offensive to most people who believe something on faith

Genesis 1 is fairly significantly different from Genesis 2 (Garden of Eden and the rest of it) and onwards. Different ordering of the days, less fiddly bits, kinda' notably different ending message... it's more or less two fairly divergent creation stories.

What sort of controversy would unfold if there was a game made that had the main theme of showing that a Christian can be just as evil as anyone else, but not actually attack the doctrine of Christianity? I've had an idea of a 1940s bioshock-ish horror game that takes place in an old british mansion of a gun maker, and I'd like to explore the theme of being in a house that seems to literally have Hell boiling behind it's walls, and have a corrupt, evil church be one of the main focal points. Thoughts?

I am a Christian, non-denominational, just incase you don't notice my sig.

I'd be fine with it
As long as it stresses that they aren't being well christianly. Like the whole church isn't doing a single bit of christiany stuff but calls itself a christian church.
Or if other Christians were against the evil ones, or at least against their actions.

Ghills -- and other LDS folks... any christians technically, I suppose...

Does your denomination have anything to say on, well... the other creation story? The first one, which doesn't particularly go the Adam and Eve route. Disregard, attempt to reconcile, something else?

What I've heard is that it's describing two things - a spiritual and a physical creation. The first is like a planning stage and the next is physically creating the things.

Everyone: How did you end up being a part of your religion? Did you discover it later on in life or were you born into it? (Or something else besides.)

If they're corrupt and evil, they're not following the doctrines of Christianity.

I'd be okay with it, as long as it was reasonably clear that he wasn't folowing doctrines accurately.

I've been avoiding this thread until now because I didn't want to accidentally infringe on the rules, but rereading the first post leads me to believe that I'm permitted to answer this:

Everyone: How did you end up being a part of your religion? Did you discover it later on in life or were you born into it? (Or something else besides.)

I'm currently an atheist, which is something I arrived at after years of doubt and reflection.  It wasn't an easy thing to admit to myself at first, but I haven't really had any faith for at least five years.  I slowly came to realize that nothing exploded when I did admit it to myself, so now I'm comfortable with it.  No lightning bolts from the sky or heart attacks dropping me dead.

I haven't yet admitted it to my family though, because I was born into a very Christian family and I know the fallout would be very unpleasant.  Specifically, they're sort of fundamental Pentecostal Holiness Christians.  If they knew I was an atheist, it would never be completely okay.

Everyone: How did you end up being a part of your religion? Did you discover it later on in life or were you born into it? (Or something else besides.)

I was raised Catholic, but I was basically an atheist until about a year ago, when I actually started taking the religion I was participating in seriously and actually became Catholic. After some... disagreements with the policies of the Catholic Church, I wouldn't describe myself as Catholic anymore. Just Christian. My parents would probably be K either way, with my father being an atheist and mother being a decently liberal Catholic.

Born in to it kinda
My dad has no belief but is open to it and attends church sometimes
My mom is a strong Christian though I'm not sure exactly what sect she is part of
I am baptist, partly because I like it's teachings and other part because my mom and other family are Christian.
I have no doubts in my faith
