Cheap Playstation games?
« on: December 13, 2014, 07:05:22 pm »

A friend of mine recently bought a PS3. I haven't owned a console since the SNES, so I don't know much about buying games for them, but I showed him a trailer for Skyrim and he was very impressed, so I'm thinking of getting it for him for Christmas. I know it's easy to get it cheap on Steam during pretty much any sale, but of course, Steam games can't be played on the Playstation. So... Can anyone recommend a good way to buy games as cheaply as possible for PS3?

Please keep in mind that I'm in the Czech Republic, and electronics are always more expensive here. I'm hoping there's a reasonably cheap option if I buy online. Amazon (UK) maybe? Or is there another international online game shop? Or do I need to just bite the financial bullet and pay full price for the console version (not the end of the world, he's a really good friend)?

Well, Amazon UK would get it to you faster for about 18 and a half pounds sterling, while Amazon US has it for a cheaper 19 and a half american dollars. Shipping is going to take longer though, shipping from Amazon US to the UAE took about a month.

Not too familiar with ways to get things for consoles on the cheap though, not lately anyway.

I bought Skyrim Legendary Edition for 29.99 (capitalist 'Murrican), which isn't all that bad..
Try www.gamestop.com  ( http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/89142 Has Skyrim non-Legendary used for 17.99)
GameFly ( http://www.gamefly.com/Store/PS3/#axzz3LqTBdk9v Skyrim is 19.99 there currently though..)also sells used games, and does pretty good with prices..
This site ( http://www.lukiegames.com/The-Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim_p_17909.html?gclid=CMrEkoHkxMICFciEfgoddVAA9A) has a copy for 12.50, but I've never used them and know nothing about them (and know nothing about any of their overseas policies besides eBay..)
eBay has its random assortment of decent prices.. ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/Video-Games-/139973/i.html?LH_BIN=1&_nkw=skyrim+ps3&_sop=15 )

Here's my "Best of the Best!" PS3 list, through my skewed dwarfly lens..
*Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
*Armored Core 5
*Disgaea 4
*Valkyria Chronicles
*Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas
*XCOM Enemy Unknown
*Dragon's Crown (though it does have some.. rather enhanced.. males and females, a bit of 'sexism' controversy, but still a good game underneath, regardless of opinion)

Here's other stuff I'd like to "fully" recommend but don't live up to my excessively high standards (bahahaha!)
*Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
*Tokyo Jungle (on Playstation Store)
*Darksiders 1 and 2
*Binary Domain (3rd person shooter)
*Earth Defense Force

And PS3's (Capcom's!) greatest crime: that they didn't provide an english-translation for the PS3 Monster Hunter :(

If they've got no previous Elder Scrolls experience you should just pick him up a cheap used copy of Oblivion, and then if they beat that then they can have a copy of Skyrim ;)

Haha, nah, I'm not getting him Oblivion. I showed him Skyrim, and he thought it looked awesome, and it would be cool for him to play at least one of the same games that I play. He's really not a "gamer" at all. His library now consists of some Fifa games, one Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed III, one of the Grand Theft Autos, and The Last Of Us. That's everything he's played since he was a little kid with a Commodore 64. I don't necessarily have to get this for him, it was just an idea, and I didn't realize how expensive PS3 games are.

In the local "cheap electronics" store, likely to have the lowest local prices, the game costs about 550 kc (about $25). So that's probably not the cheapest way to get it. Anything from America, however, will cost an arm and a leg to ship, and may not make it all the way here. Sometimes Amazon.co.uk offers free or cheap shipping to the CR, but then, sometimes it costs even more than the item you're buying. Depends. Amazon.de has about the same price as here, except I'd have to add shipping.

Amazing. I got it on Steam during a sale for less than 4 euros. Such a huge difference, especially considering that if you have a really nice computer, it can run even better than on a console.

I've never really understood consoles in general, at least not since gaming PCs have been reasonably priced. I suppose it comes down to what you're used to. While I was visiting this friend, he told me "hey, you're a gamer -- help me get past this level" and shoved a PS3 controller in my hand for the first time. I've never played Playstation (we were a proud Nintendo family since my first NES) and I was totally lost. The controls felt so clunky compared to the computer, and I had so much less control. I died several times while trying to aim the gun with that joystick. Again, probably just matters what you're used to, I guess.

I remember Amazon has some restrictions on sendindg anything CD/DVD related though, you might wanna check their FAQ or something. Personally, I refer ebay. I often can get a better deals there. There is of course a small chance you get shafted, but these days ebay has quite some measures to prevent many frauds. Just remember not to pay outside of ebay services and to check the seller for any negative comment.

As for games: ...hmmm, been a while since I followed the PS3 related news. But I do remember Red Dead Redemption being highly praised. So was the Metal Gear Solid 4, though from what I've heard this series can be a bit strange in a silly, Japanese way so I don't know if it is a good suggestion for someone not really that into games. Resistance series is also pretty good, from what I've heard, but it is a FPS on a console... There's also MotorStorm 2 if hes into off-road racing. Speaking of racing, there is of course also Gran Turismo series but you have 5 and 6 released for PS3 and I have no Idea which is supposed to be "better". I'm guessing 6 because more cars and more realism and stuff? Uncharted 2 has some raving reviews, might wanna check that. I really liked Ratchet and Clank back on PS2 though I have no idea what games released for PS3 are like. And if he likes Grand Theft Auto I think he might like Infamous and it's sequel which were both considered pretty good IIRC. Oh and if you are feeling like being mean, I guess you could get him either Ninja Gaiden Sigma or Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2? Not Sigma 3 though because apparently if was kinda meh. And speaking of hard games, Demon Souls, a spiritual predecessor of Dark Souls, is apparently pretty damn good too.

That's all I can remember and find right now. I'm guessing you could get most of them decently cheap over on ebay, now that the age of PS4 has come.
