Close off the source of the water (hope that is a possibility: strategic cave-ins are usually an option, but I hope you had floodgates or doors or hatches installed somewhere along the line with a lever to control them).

Drain it into a cavern. Drain it into a reservoir designed to dry it out (e.g. competely empty level: double points for making it multi z-levels high, hollow, and encouraging giant mushroom growth.

The area the wtters flooding in is impossible to get to and I lose half my arena blocking it off

will water from my river stop flooding upwards at any point?

Diverting the water is one option or you could build a pump to move the water out of its path, but you should really be more careful with water, it tends to go from minor mistake to big problem very quickly...

If this is coming directly out of a river the only chance you have may be to wait for the winter freeze (if it's coming from an aquifer I can't help you), but if you need a solution now you could just make an area large enough for the water to spread out and evaporate faster than it can flow in, but that's harder if the place the water is flowing in through a path two or three tiles wide rather than being one tile wide...

Good, once it does that you should build a raising bridge or floodgate (beware of building destroyers) where the water is/was flowing in (or just a wall, but if you want to be able to wash out your arena later it would be nice to have the option of deluging it). Don't forget that water can flow through diagonals too...

yeah the thing was I did have a floodgate but I placed the floodgate just behind were I added the well because I didn't pay attention xD

The arena itself was made for controll floods but the stupid well wasn't meant to be the thing that was flooding it xD

Water pressure: it exists.

I learned that the hard way when I tried to fill my cistern and ended up flooding the residential area, textile and leatherworking shops and fortress hospital... No dwarves were harmed the first time...

Dig down and to the edge of the map, smooth and engrave fortifications, then connect to the source of the flood. The water will drain off the map.

How? Seriously, how did your dwarves avoid harm?

Also, if you have an aquifer anywhere on your map, try setting up a path so the water flowing into your arena will flow into the top of the aquifer.

I had just reclaimed it from ruin, so none of my dwarves had moved in yet... luckily I managed to drain it later by digging out a large room and releasing the water into it...

Well two dwarves died the founder and an stone crafter
after the water tank was taped into from the cavern a LARGE jet of water traping the miner imediatly as well as the two bistandereds

AMZINGLY the miner that got the full force of the water pressure survived and managed to swim out of the tank and into the main arena tho he won't leave now... I should survive tell the week my forts river freezes.

Wall the arena off and build another one.
