Indeed.  In general, cooking destroys seeds and eating raw/brewing extracts the seeds.  Look at the wiki to see specific exceptions. If you go in the kitchen menu after pressing Z, you can select what food is brewable, cookable etc.

It would have been better to do plant gathering in the fall vs the winter, I'm not sure how fruitful (ha) your effort will be in the middle of winter.  But if you get a few plants plus your strawberries, it may be enough to survive the winter.

You can disable cooking of brewable items and brews in the kitchen menu. I always do this in the beginning.
I always buy all the food the first two caravans bring and send all the migrants on plant picking duty. To disable all the plants and re-enable them later... Na, too lazy!

I just turn 'em off and leave 'em off. If the dwarves have a cooking job, they can cook meat, or plump helmets, or other things that don't brew.

I have too many fruits and plump helmets so I cook them.
And you don't have to disable all of them, just those few types you need.

Sacriledge!  You can brew plump helmets, how else are you supposed to get dwarven wine?!?  ;)  In fact, I heartily recommend turning cooking plump helmets so it doesn't kill the seeds (the spawns).

In general though, I agree with your advice.  I only cook meat and meat products, and some plants I either don't think I'll ever plant or I have in over-abundance (eventually cooking plump helmets makes sense, but at the beginning it can really screw you over, since plump helmets are such a reliable source of food/booze)

I tend to prefer to try to arrange for dwarves to get more healthy diets, by arranging a wide variety of surface crops, and then controlling what gets sent to kitchens using linked stockpiles.

That way dwarven roasts (while still minced... blech) end up being made of beef, potatoes, carrots, and celery (etc.)

There are several surface crops that cannot be processed into booze, cannot be milled, cannot be processed to barrel, cannot be processed to bag, etc-- that can only be eaten raw, or cooked into a meal.  Those I monitor rather closely until I have 200 seeds for them, then I enable cooking until it hits 100 seeds. That way the slow dietary consumption of raw plants builds the seed supplies back up, and those "garden veg" type plants get into my roasts.

This tends to flood the fortress with surface crops instead of the limited fare of "traditional dwarven soul food" consisting of plump helmet stuffed plump helmets stuffed into a masterfully minced tallow jello mold that flooding a fortress with plump helmets seems to create.

It's just personal preference.

I still want to revamp the kitchen reactions some time.

I'm attempting to delve into this for my fort since I don't have much to do as a result of no massive dig projects being allowed.

I would very much like some type of nutrition system in the game. I think it'd be pretty awesome to have stronger dwarves as a result of your careful management of their food, or having horribly obesse dwarves as a result of giving them the wrong type of food.

I have excellent turducken type roasts, made of everything from unicorn spleen and rhino meat to goose-eggs and mushrooms. Huge, wide, barrel-enabled food stockpiles is key.

Same here, never had problems with variety in foods but I never quantum stockpile either (not food anyway)...

It would be good to have some benefit to actually keeping dwarves well fed with variety and enough quantity rather than just keeping them fed enough to not starve to death or to have a benefit to growing more than just plump helmets, but I understand how some people won't want to deal with things like crops more than they have to just like I don't want to deal with things like a economy more than I have to...
