Captured Wild animals (magical)
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:27:01 am »

Hello !

Can someone answer me this questions or just redirect me please.
1.How to properry train/tame caged/grazing/flying/dangerous animals.
2.How to deal with unwanted captured creatures ? (millitary traning/trade/throwing them from tower on some spikes ?)
3.Wiki say "wildlife supply isn't infinite" -> does this apply for masterwork ?
I tryed to find answers for my questions in MW manual/dfwiki/google but i still have some questions.

I finished building a big maze with cage traps so i capture every capturable animal on map(my frist time of using cage traps so i overkilled it).
Right now i have caged. 4 unicorns ,2 pegasus,4 firebirds,3 Red panda sow,3 Inkhorns (waiting for goblins)

What you do with wild animals ?

I tried to tame pegasus and unicorns but my trainer sucks (beast wardens guild) and its only Semi-wild/Trained stage so they are going wild quite fast.
That is why a i caged them on pasture/animal training zone so they cannot run away to kill dwarves when they go wild again.

I am worried about this.
"Only wild animals can be trained in a cage. If you want your animal trainer to provide further training you must release the trained animal."
"Note that [GRAZER] animals need a pasture to survive, and will die if left to linger in a cage for too long."

source: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Animal_trainer

Once i have semi-wild animal i can put it on pasture/animal training zone so they will not starve to death in cage and trainer can provide further training. But what if they go wild again and start running (flying for pegasus) ? My trainer will grab the "wild" animal -> train it again and set it back on pasture ? and if my trainer get more knowledge about animal it will tame them faster/ better/higher taming tier ? ? How hard is to domesticate/tame animals like i have ?

I just dont want magical wild animal kill stuff inside my fort.

Also what you do with unwanted animals beside atom-smashing ?   I think i cannot release them because they will be caught again.

Maybe i can train my military on them but magical creatures like Pegasus/Unicorn/Firebird will probably slaughter my whole "army".
Maybe marksdwarves can kill them through fortification but i dont know if things like Firebird cant attack back.
About selling them.

I know sell animals in wooden cages is bad idea if i trade with elves.
better Trained animal -> higher value.

If you have any other ideas how to deal with captured creatures please share them !

You cant even sell animals, so most of this is purely theoratical. If you try to sell a "animal x cage", you literally just sell the cage. Not the animal.

Good to know. I though if i can buy animals -> i can sell animals.

I need to kill them without harming any of my dwarfs....
I read somewhere on forums that falling from height on spikes will kill caged animals... must try.

For non-grazers, you can (b)uild the cages in a common area and designate a room from it, making a "zoo" that dwarves will hang out in and admire.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Zoo

Can be a good source of happys for dwarves who have Preferences for animals.

Sounds like a good idea.

if you catch wild animals and want to kill them, I think you can just train them once and then designate them to be slaughtered, also.

I though they must be fully tamed/domesticated for normal slaughter in butcher shop ... i hope unicorn meat wil be tasty :D

If anything else fails, linking their cage to a lever will create a simple trap against intruders.

I'm pretty sure you could do it even if they were semi-wild, and possibly if they are wild. (I had problems pasturing a wild deer, tho.)

But yea you can slaughter them. And unicorn meat is so so so delicious. It tastes like shattered dreams.

the way i usually do it, i setup several dwarves as beast wardens, keep a breeding pair of all of the animals i find, butcher the rest, once the breeding pair have a litter, the semi-wild or trained babies can be tamed, once a litter is born simply set the new animals to be trained again, they will change from trained to tame. after that they are perfectly normal as pets or any other use, some can be war trained and others are just useful for breeding food, also finding an egg laying creature is helpful for building an egg industry for extra food

Children can be fully tamed/domesticated? Good to know .... i just love to have many animals.

Yep, the idea is they are bred in captivity and are raised around dwarves from the start.

I've only been able to designate 'Tame' creatures (at least Semi-Wild) for Slaughter at the butcher shop. I think that's in the Wiki somewhere, but I can't seem to find it at the moment >.<

Animals are awesome, and I always try to capture and domesticate as many different types as I can. Having said that, I've shied away from Firebirds... though perhaps that's due to a lack of imagination on my part.

a quick note about firebirds that i use... i have a designated area/kill pit where all caged prisoners go, anything i dont train gets dropped into a 20 z drop into weapon traps, but that is beside the point, for firebirds and other dangerous wildlife, i have an area for special training. i dig out a 3 by 3 room and designate as pasture and animal training with a 3 long passage leading to the room, now that being said, add traps to the entrance and there u go, as long as the room is on stone flooring the firebirds will recapture before doing any damage to the fort.

"Be warned: trained animals immediately become trapavoid, and will stay so if they ever go wild again, making recapture impossible." Bug:6002

That Bug:6002 URL say: fixed in 0.40.01 ................   it is fixed for Masterwork Dwarf Fortress 0.34.11 ? This can save me lot of trouble.
